  1. 1. Lateral movements versus stationarity : adaptive alternatives in benthic invertebrates to the seasonal environment in a boreal river

    Author : Tommy I. Olsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Benthic invertebrates; cold-hardiness; ice; migrations; overwintering; river; seasonal variations; spatial distribution; spring flood; water level;

    Abstract : Benthic invertebrates inhabiting boreal rivers are exposed to very large seasonal variations in their physical environment. The extremes are in winter when the littoral area freezes solid and in spring when water flow increases rapidly. READ MORE

  2. 2. Benthic cryptofauna and internal bioeroders on coral reefs

    Author : Helena Strömberg; Charlotta Kvarnemo; Pat Hutchings; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioerosion; cryptofauna; coral; invertebrates; damselfish; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : The cryptofauna of coral reefs may act as a food source for fish, while being grazers or predators themselves, and hence constitute an important group in the coral reef food web. In addition, the actively eroding taxa of the cryptofauna contribute to the decomposition and recirculation of calcium carbonate and are consequently essential for the rebuilding new coral. 3. 3. Radionuclides in the Baltic Sea : Ecosystem models and experiments on transport and fate

    Author : Linda Kumblad; Nils Kautsky; Ulrik Kautsky; Michael Gilek; Michael Thorne; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; radionuclide; baltic sea; ecosystem model; ecosystem dynamics; risk assessment; safety assessment; benthic invertebrates; bioturbation; bioaccumulation; remobilisation; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Manmade radionuclides have been introduced to the environment for almost a century. The main source has been the nuclear weapons testing programmes, but accidental releases from the nuclear power production industries have also contributed. The risk to humans from potential releases from nuclear facilities is evaluated in safety assessments. READ MORE

  4. 4. Laser Based Flow Measurements to Evaluate Hydraulic Conditions for Migrating Fish and Benthic Fauna

    Author : S M Sayeed Bin Asad; Staffan Lundström; J. Gunnar I. Hellström; Anders G. Andersson; Berhanu Mulu Geberkiden; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fish Migration; Step Cylinder; Shedding; Vortex Street; Shear stress; PIV; benthic fauna; river; stones; Strömningslära; Fluid Mechanics;

    Abstract : Hydropower is one of the main sources for Sweden’s energy, which is clean and renewable. It is a clean energy source because no fuels are burned which does not pollute the air and it is a renewable energy source as it only uses natural water cycle for generating energy. READ MORE

  5. 5. Ecological succession of benthic macrofauna following disturbance : Effects of contaminants and in situ sediment remediation

    Author : Caroline Raymond; Jonas S. Gunnarsson; Agnes M. L. Karlson; Francisco J. A. Nascimento; Joanna Norkko; Gert Van Hoey; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Activated carbon; Benthos; Bioturbation; Contaminants; Environmental indices; Environmental monitoring; Environmental quality; Seafloor integrity; Sediment remediation; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Abstract : More than 70% of the Earth is covered by water, and most of the sea floor consists of soft sediments, such as mud, clay and sand. Thus, soft sediments form one of the most important habitats on Earth, with a high diversity of organisms. READ MORE
