  1. 1. Hemicellulose as barrier material

    Author : Hartman Jonas; Ann-Christine Albertsson; Gunnar Henriksson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hemicellulose; galactoglucomannan; plasma surface treatment; vaporphase grafting; benzylation; contact angle; oxygen permeability; solution casting; Cellulose and paper engineering; Cellulosa- och pappersteknik;

    Abstract : Polysaccharides constitute an important source of raw materials for the packaging industry today. Polysaccharides have good natural barrier properties which are necessary for packaging films. Cellulose is the forerunner among renewable polymers for such applications. Hemicelluloses represent a new interesting breed of barrier materials. READ MORE

  2. 2. Expanding the H-phosphonate and H-phosphonothioate chemistry towards biologically important phosphate analogs

    Author : Gaston Lavén; Jacek Stawinski; Wojciech T. Markiewicz; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phosphonate; phosphonothioate; H-phosphonate; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi; organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on chemical transformations of H-phosphonate and H-phosphonothioate and can be divided in two parts. The first part, is devoted to the development of the palladium-catalyzed P-C bond formation. Both mechanistic and synthetic studies of the transformations have been performed. READ MORE

    Abstract : This thesis describes the syntheses of the 1-propionylatedauxiliaries (S)-(− )-2-(pyrrolidin-2-yl)propan-2-ol and (S)-(− )-2-(1-methoxy-1-methylethyl)pyrrolidine andtheir use in asymmetric aldol and alkylation reactions. Thesynthesis of 1-propionylated (2S,4R) 2-{4-[(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy]pyrrolidin-2-yl}propan-2-olis also described. READ MORE

  4. 4. Synthesis of oligosaccharides related to the capsular polysaccharides of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 9 and of Cryptococcus neoformans

    Author : Marianne Alpe; Ulf Ellervik; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry; organisk kemi;

    Abstract : In the present investigation, synthesis of oligosaccharides corresponding to structural elements present in the capsular polysaccharides of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Cryptococcus neoformans has been achieved. The first two sections describe the synthesis of spacer-equipped oligosaccharides corresponding to structures from the CPS of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 9N, 9A and 9L, the production of which involved synthetic challenges such as the construction of β-ManNAc and α-GlcA linkages. 5. 5. Development of strategies for construction of thioglycoside building blocks corresponding to repeating triads of Cryptococcus neoformans GXM capsular polysaccharide

    Author : Lina Rydner; Stefan Oscarson; Olof Ramström; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Crytococcus neoformans; Capsular polysaccharide; Thioglycosides; Convergent synthesis; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi; organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the development of methods for synthesis of thioglycoside building blocks corresponding to the repeating units of the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of Cryptococcus neoformans, an opportunistic fungal pathogen. The building blocks are suitable for construction of large synthetic oligosaccharides related to the native CPS-structures which are to be used in biological studies in order to identify protective epitopes with the aim to develop a glycoconjugate vaccine against C.
