  1. 1. TGF-beta signaling in cancer

    Author : Erik Johansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TGF-β; proliferation; cancer; tumor suppressor; diffuse-type gastric carcinoma; neuroblastoma; nuclear receptor TLX; cancer stem cell; angiogenesis; ABCG2; VHL; HIF2α; hypoxia; Smad3;

    Abstract : Transforming Growth Factor Beta (TGF-β) is a cytokine regulating a wide range of cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, and migration. At the early stages of cancer development TGF-β functions as a tumor suppressor, mainly due to its inhibitory effect on cellular growth, but during cancer progression, mutations in TGF-β signal components switches TGF-β into a promoter of cancer cell proliferation, survival and metastasis. 2. 2. Studies of neuropeptides in pancreatic beta cell function with special emphasis on islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP)

    Author : Ella Karlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; alpha cell; amylin; beta cell; chromogranin; growth; IAPP; insulin; islet amyloid polypeptide; leptin; NOD mice; pancreastatin; pancreatic islet; proliferation; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : The presence of protein amyloid in pancreas and its association to diabetes was first described 100 years ago in 1901, but was not identified as Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (IAPP) until 1986. The aim of the present work was to determine the role of the beta cell hormone, IAPP, in normal pancreatic islet physiology and during early disturbances of islet function. READ MORE

  3. 3. Study of the Proliferation, Function and Death of Insulin-Producing Beta-Cells in vitro: Role of the Transcription Factor ZBED6

    Author : Xuan Wang; Nils Welsh; Nils Billestrup; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ZBED6; Pancreatic beta-cell; Proliferation; Insulin secretion; Apoptosis; Adhesion; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : A thorough understanding of beta-cell proliferation, function, death and regeneration under normal condition as well as in the progression of diabetes is crucial to the conquest of this disease. The work presented in this thesis aimed to investigate the expression and role of a novel transcription factor, Zinc finger BED domain-containing protein 6 (ZBED6), in beta-cells. READ MORE

  4. 4. Protein tyrosine kinases in insulin producing cells : Expression and putative importance for beta-cell function

    Author : Charlotte Öberg-Welsh; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; Protein tyrosine kinase; insulin producing cells; fetal development; VEGF; Src-family; Bsk; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Protein tyrosine kinases are of importance for cell replication and differentiation in manysystems. The mechanisms controlling the replication and differentiation of insulin producingcells are unknown. READ MORE

  5. 5. Role of MAP Kinases in the Life and Death of Beta-cells

    Author : Natalia Makeeva; Nils Welsh; Godfried Roomans; Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; diabetes; beta-cell; p38 MAPK; nitric oxide; apoptosis; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The development of diabetes mellitus depends on the balance between beta-cell proliferation and death. As mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) may control this balance, the aim of this study was to investigate the events leading to MAPK activation in beta-cells and the consequences of these events.
