  1. 1. Auxiliary Cells for the Vascularization and Function of Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Liza Grapensparr; Uppsala universitet.; [2017]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Islets of Langerhans; beta cells; diabetes; transplantation; vascularization; Schwann cells; endothelial progenitor cells; neural crest stem cells; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes develops through the progressive destruction of the insulin-producing beta-cells. Regeneration or replacement of beta-cells is therefore needed to restore normal glucose homeostasis. Presently, normoglycemia can be achieved by the transplantation of whole pancreas or isolated islets of Langerhans. READ MORE

  2. 2. From the pancreatic beta cell to the endothelium:Pathophysiological aspects of Type 2 Diabetes

    University dissertation from Faculty of Medicine, Lund University

    Author : Marloes Dekker Nitert; Lunds universitet.; Lund University.; [2007]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; sekretion; diabetologi; diabetology; insulin secretion; beta cells; glucose tolerance; insulin receptors; IGF-I receptors; endothelial cells; Endokrinologi; Type 2 Diabetes; secreting systems; Endocrinology;

    Abstract : The incidence of Diabetes Mellitus increases globally in epidemic proportions. Type 2 Diabetes is the most prevalent form of Diabetes, comprising 90% of the patients. In Type 2 Diabetes, two processes contribute to the development of the disease: insufficient insulin secretion from the pancreatic ?-cell and insulin resistance of the target organs. READ MORE

  3. 3. Maf and Mitf transcription factors regulate pancreatic endocrine cell differentiation and function

    University dissertation from Stem Cell Center, Lund University

    Author : Magdalena Mazur; Lunds universitet.; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; Lund University.; [2013]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pancreas development; beta cells; insulin; MafA; MafB; Mitf; diabetes;

    Abstract : Popular Abstract in Swedish Patienter med diabetes kan inte kontrollera blodsockernivåerna på grund av att de saknar insulinproducerande celler eller har icke fungerande insulinproducerande celler. Det finns olika typer av diabetes där typ 1 diabetes och typ 2 diabetes är de vanligaste formerna. READ MORE

  4. 4. Frk/Shb Signalling in Pancreatic Beta-cells Roles in Islet Function, Beta-cell Development and Survival as Implicated in Mouse Knockout Models

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Björn Åkerblom; Uppsala universitet.; [2009]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICINE Morphology; cell biology; pathology Cell biology Medical cell biology; MEDICIN Morfologi; cellbiologi; patologi Cellbiologi Medicinsk cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : The adaptor protein Shb and the non-receptor tyrosine kinase Frk have been implicated in intracellular signalling in insulin-producing beta cells. In this thesis, knockout mice are used to further elucidate the role of Shb and Frk for beta cell number, cytokine-induced cell death, and glucose homeostasis. READ MORE

  5. 5. Cholesterol in T cells homeostasis, plasma membrane organization and signaling

    University dissertation from Stockholm : The Wenner-Gren Institute, Stockholm University

    Author : Saleemulla Mahammad; Stockholms universitet.; [2010]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology Cell and molecular biology Cell biology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi Cell- och molekylärbiologi Cellbiologi; Cell Biology; cellbiologi; Plasma membrane; T cells; Cholesterol; Lipid rafts; Membrane organization; Cholesterol homeostasis; cholesteryl esters;

    Abstract : The plasma membrane of eukaryotic cells contains cholesterol and glycosphingolipids enriched nanodomains known as lipid rafts; which are believed to exist in a liquid ordered (lo) state. Methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (MBCD) is used to deplete cellular cholesterol and a widespread assumption is that MBCD preferentially targets cholesterol in lipid rafts. READ MORE
