  2. 2. Plant community assembly during succession from arable fields to semi-natural grassland

    Author : Barbara Christine Schmid; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; diversity; arable-to-grassland succession; space-for-time approach; land-use history; plant community assembly; grazing management; connectivity measures; dispersal vector; vascular plants; grassland specialist conservation;

    Abstract : Large areas of grazed, species rich semi-natural grassland were lost in Europe during the last two centuries and as a consequence led to decreases in grassland specialist species. Therefore, today the “restoration” of grassland on previously arable fields is recommended for the protection of grassland specialists. READ MORE

  3. 3. Plant species diversity in semi-natural grasslands. Effects of scale, landscape structure and habitat history

    Author : Triin Reitalu; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; habitat fragmentation; landscape diversity; habitat connectivity; historical maps; continuity; land-use history;

    Abstract : The thesis examines the impact of present and past landscape structure, habitat history and management on different aspects of present-day plant species diversity in fragmented semi-natural grasslands in Sweden and in Estonia. Species diversity was significantly associated with present and/or past grassland connectivity in the majority of the studies in the thesis. READ MORE

  4. 4. On starlings and farming: population decline, foraging strategies, cost of reproduction and breeding success

    Author : Måns Bruun; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; breeding success; foraging strategies; intensification; agricultural methods; population decline; farmland bird; cost of reproduction; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : The European Starling Sturnus vulgaris as many other farmland bird species has been declining during the last decades. The cause of these declines is generally believed to be changes with in agricultural methods affecting breeding and survival of birds. READ MORE

  5. 5. Small biotopes: Landscape and management effects on pollinators

    Author : Annika Söderman; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Agri-environmnetal scheme; management; agriculture; landscape complexity; heterogeneity; landscape scale; mall biotopes; field boundaries; pollinating insects; pollination; bumblebees; solitary bees; hoverflies;

    Abstract : The intensification of agriculture during the second half of the twentieth century, has caused sever declines of farmland biodiversity, where loss of semi-natural habitats is one of the major drivers. To halt further loss of habitat and biodiversity, agri-environmental schemes (AES) are used to compensate farmers to use methods less harmful to the environment. READ MORE
