  1. 1. Life will find a way : Structural and evolutionary insights into FusB and HisA

    Author : Xiaohu Guo; Maria Selmer; Joel L. Sussman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : HisA; TrpF; protein evolution; bi-functional enzyme; fusidic acid; antibiotic resistance; protein synthesis; FusB;

    Abstract : How do microbes adapt to challenges from the environment? In this thesis, two distinct cases were examined through structural and biochemical methods. In the first, we followed a real-time protein evolution of HisA to a novel function. The second case was fusidic acid (FA) resistance mediated by the protein FusB in Staphylococcus aureus. READ MORE

  2. 2. Structural Studies of Microbial Proteins - From Escherichia coli and Herpesviruses

    Author : Daniel Gurmu; Heidi Erlandsen; Pär Nordlund; Arne O. Smalås; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CaiB; RibD; YhaK; SOX; ORF60; Herpesvirus; E. coli; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : Structure biology concerns the study of the molecular structures of biological macromolecules, such as proteins, and how these relate to the function. Protein structures are also of importance in structure-based drug design. In this thesis, the work has been carried out in two different projects. READ MORE

  3. 3. Generating Affinity Proteins for Biotechnological, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Applications

    Author : Feifan Yu; Per-Åke Nygren; Lynne Regan; KTH; []
    Keywords : Protein engineering; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : Protein engineering is a powerful tool to modify proteins to generate novel and desired properties that could be applied in biotechnological, diagnostics and therapeutic areas. In this thesis, both rational design and library based engineering principles have been exploited to develop affinity proteins with desired traits. READ MORE

  4. 4. The role of HMG-coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR) and statin medication in the Central Nervous System : Cognitive Functions, Metabolism, Feeding and Sleep Behaviour

    Author : Ahmed Alsehli; Helgi B. Schiöth; Michael J. Williams; Heinrich Dircksen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Statin; cardiovascular disease; HMGCR; PCSK9; sleep; insomnia; circadian; Chronotype; feeding;

    Abstract : Millions of people are currently on statin medications (HMGCR inhibitors) to prevent cardiovascular diseases. Despite considerable central nervous system expression, little is known about HMGCR function in the brain. READ MORE

  5. 5. Cellular Processes and Mechanisms in Saccharomyces cerevisiae Influencing Anaerobic Xylose Fermentation

    Author : Basti Bergdahl; Teknisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; Bioethanol; Xylose metabolism; Metabolomics; Regulation; Protein folding; Microbial growth;

    Abstract : In 2009 the EU approved two directives as a first initiative towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and becoming independent of fossil fuels: the Renewable Energy Directive and the Fuel Quality Directive. As a result, the demand for biofuels will increase enormously over the next decade, both nationally and in the entire EU. READ MORE
