  1. 1. Biliary epithelial cells, the immune system and PSC pathogenesis

    Author : Lena Berglin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic, inflammatory liver disease that leads to destruction of the bile duct system. PSC is strongly associated with inflammatory bowel disease, and PSC patients have an increased risk of developing malignancies, especially cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies on mechanisms in liver fibrosis

    Author : Nils Kinnman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : bile duct epithelial cell; chernotaxis; cholestasis; cystic fibrosis; cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator; endothelin; hepatic stellate cell; hepatitis C virus; liver fibrosis; platelet-derived growth factor; platelet-derived growth factor receptor [beta]; smooth muscle [alpha]-actin; transforming growth factor- [beta]; tumor necrosis factor-[alpha];

    Abstract : The aim of the present study was to elucidate mechanisms involved in liver fibrogenesis, the wound healing response of the liver to chronic injury. A role for TNF-[alpha] and all three isoforms of TGF-[beta] in the pathogenesis of hepatitis C related liver disease was suggested by the finding of increased expression of TGF-[beta]1-3, latent TGF-[beta] binding protein (LTBP), and TNF-[alpha] by immunohistochemistry in areas of inflammation and fibrosis in liver tissue from untreated patients with hepatitis C. 3. 3. Role of membrane associated molecules in liver fibrosis

    Author : Peter Rosenberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Adhesion molecules; liver fibrosis; cholestasis; R-cadherin; N-CAM; EBP50; CFTR; cystic fibrosis; methotrexate; diabetes; over-weight; alcohol;

    Abstract : The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of membrane associated proteins in tissue formation and remodeling, in normal embryogenesis and in liver disease. Molecules associated with cellular membranes provide a fundamental basis for cellular interactions during development, homeostasis and disease. READ MORE

  4. 4. Immune interactions with the liver

    Author : Azza Karrar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Liver sinusoid; endothelial cells; apoptosis; antibodies; liver immunity; biliary cells; autoimmune liver diseases; estrogen;

    Abstract : The liver has an important role in the induction of immune tolerance and can be a target for immune mediated damage. The following studies are performed to address the role of liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSEC) in tolerance induction and to understand some of the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).
