1. Brain Aromatase in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata : Distribution, control and role in behaviour
Abstract : Oestrogens are produced by aromatisation of androgens by the aromatase enzyme. In the vertebrate brain this synthesis has vital functions in nerve protection, cell proliferation and nerve development during injury respectively brain development. READ MORE

2. Synthesis of nanostructured and hierarchical materials for bio-applications
Abstract : In recent years, nanostructured materials incorporated with inorganic particles and polymers have attracted attention for simultaneous multifunctional biomedical applications. This thesis summarized three works, which are preparation of mesoporous silica coated superparamagnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4@mSiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) as magnetic resonance imaging T2 contrast agents, polymer grafted Fe3O4@mSiO2 NPs response to temperature change, synthesis and biocompatibility evaluation of high aspect ratio (AR) gold nanorods. 3. Neuroproteomic profiling of human body fluids
Abstract : This thesis provides results from affinity based studies where human body fluids were profiled to find markers for neurological diseases. Both proteins and autoantibodies were analysed using microarray technologies that can profile hundreds of analytes and hundreds of samples in parallel using small sample volumes. READ MORE

4. Computational and experimental approaches to regulatory genetic variation
Abstract : Genetic variation is a strong risk factor for many human diseases, including diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, depression, autoimmunity and asthma. Most of the disease genes identified so far alter the amino acid sequences of encoded proteins. READ MORE

5. Antibody based plasma protein profiling
Abstract : This thesis is about protein profiling in serum and plasma using antibody suspension bead arrays for the analysis of biobanked samples and in the context of prostate cancer biomarker discovery. The influence of sample preparation methods on antibody based protein profiles were investigated (Papers I-III) and a prostate cancer candidate biomarker identified and verified (Papers III-V).
