1. Influence of the properties of bio-coal as a substitute for fossil coal in carbon composite agglomerates and in coke
Abstract : The iron-ore-based blast furnace (BF) process is still the most dominant method for producing metallic iron units for steelmaking, and the BF is also the main contributor to the 7-9% of global CO2 emissions which, according to World Steel Association, originate from the steel industry. The steel industry is aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by different means. READ MORE

2. High-throughput protein analysis using mass spectrometry-based methods
Abstract : In the field of proteomics, proteins are analyzed and quantified in high numbers. Protein analysis is of great importance and can for example generate information regarding protein function and involvement in disease. Different strategies for protein analysis and quan- tification have emerged, suitable for different applications. READ MORE

3. Strength and colour response of solid wood to heat treatment
Abstract : Heat treatment is a method for improving the durability and dimensional stability of wood. The treatment method used in this work is called Thermo Wood and is industrially applied in Finland. In 2004 production was 31146 m3. The method involves heating wood in a steam atmosphere where the heat causes chemical changes in the structure of the wood. READ MORE

4. Dried nanofibrillated cellulose and its bionanocomposites
Abstract : During the past decade there has been a growing interest in the reinforcement of synthetic polymers with cellulose nanowhiskers and nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) obtained from plants or bacteria. Their beneficial mechanical properties like high stiffness and strength, in combination with their low mass allowed successful reinforcement of water based polymer dispersions (latexes) for the production of solution cast composite films. 5. Heating and drying wood using microwave power
Abstract : The potentials for moisture flux in wood during microwave heating have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experiments were performed in three different kinds of microwave applicators. A computer model based on the finite difference method was developed to describe and predict the heat and mass transfer. READ MORE
