  1. 1. Synchrotron radiation studies of gas phase molecules : from hydrogen to DNA sugars

    Author : Gemma Vall-llosera; Elisabeth Rachlew; Stacey Sorensen; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; KTH thesis; synchrotron radiation; gas phase; bio molecules; Atomic and molecular physics; Atom- och molekylfysik;

    Abstract : This thesis summarises experimental results on the molecular spectroscopy of gas phase molecules excited by synchrotron radiation in the VUV and soft X-ray regions. We have used three different detection techniques, photon induced fluorescence spectroscopy, photoionisation mass spectroscopy and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy to study molecular deuterium, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, methanol, pyridine, pyridazine, pyrimidine, pyrazine, s-triazine, and 2-deoxy-D-ribose, the last one also known as the DNA sugar. 2. 2. Generation and characterization of Affibody molecules targeting HER3

    Author : Magdalena Malm; Stefan Ståhl; Jennifer Cochran; KTH; []
    Keywords : Affibody molecules; epidermal growth factor receptors; HER3; ErbB3; combinatorial protein engineering; combinatorial library; staphylococcal surface display;

    Abstract : In the field of oncology, the ability to target specific tumor cells using highly selective targeting molecules is an attractive and emerging concept. In this context, the epidermal growth factor receptor HER3 has proven central to the biology behind many different human cancers and inhibition of the signaling mediated by this receptor could provide antitumoral effects. 4. 4. QCM-D – with focus on biosensing in biomolecular and cellular systems

    Author : Erik Nilebäck; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; QCM-D; biomolecular interactions; cell-surface interaction; glycosaminoglycans; viscoelasticity; cell morphology; Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring; surface chemistry; protein conformation;

    Abstract : The high degree of complexity in biological systems is being investigated in greater and greater detail by increasingly sophisticated sensing approaches. The quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) technique stands out in this context, by probing the viscoelastic properties at interfaces. READ MORE

    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; superstructure; lyotropic liquid crystal; self-assembly; Calcium phosphate; bone-like apatite; amphiphilic peptide; nanocomposite; biomimetic mineralization;

    Abstract : The intercellular material in bone is a nanocomposite of aligned “hard” inorganics—calcium phosphate (CaP) platelets embedded in the long-range ordered “soft” organic collagen matrix. This elaborate structural arrangement redeems the weaknesses of the individual components (being soft protein or brittle mineral) and gives bone its excellent mechanical properties for the protection and support of our bodies.
