  1. 21. Characterization of PAH-contaminated soils focusing on availability, chemical composition and biological effects

    Author : Magnus Bergknut; Mats Tysklind; Dag Broman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; PAHs; availability; bioavailability; chemical analysis; characterization; GC-TOFMS; bioassay; toxicity; biological testing; multivariate methods; PCA; PLS; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : The risks associated with a soil contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are generally assessed by measuring individual PAHs in the soil and correlating the obtained amounts to known adverse biological effects of the PAHs. The validity of such a risk estimation is dependent on the presence of additional compounds, the availability of the compounds (including the PAHs), and the methods used to correlate the measured chemical data and biological effects. 2. 22. The accessibility and chemical activity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil

    Author : Fredrik Reichenberg; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Analytisk kemi; Analytical chemistry; Remediation; Bioavailability; Soil and sediment pollution; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : This thesis proposes the use of two concepts: accessibility and chemical activity. Accessibility describes the mass quantity of PAHs that is or can become available within a given time span and under given conditions. READ MORE

  3. 23. Growth hormone responsiveness in children : results from Swedish multicenter clinical trials of growth hormone treatment

    Author : Elena Lundberg; Berit Kriström; Kerstin Albertsson-Wikland; Roland Pfäffle; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; gain in height; puberty; IGHD; non-GHD; IGF-I; bioavailability;

    Abstract : The general aims of the thesis were to study GH responsiveness by estimation of pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of injected recombinant human GH (rhGH), of growth response as gain in heightSDS during childhood and puberty, and IGF-I response as change in circulating IGF-ISDS and IGFBP3SDS. Methods Short children were recruited during 1988–1999 into two national randomized multicentre clinical trials on growth until adult height. READ MORE

  4. 24. Iron absorption and iron status related to diet : an experimental and epidemiological study

    Author : Per Tidehag; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; iron status; iron absorption; bioavailability; dietary fiber; phytate; calcium; radioiron; diet;

    Abstract : The absorption of iron from the diet is a major determinant of the iron status of an individual. Accurate measures of iron absorption are thus essential in the determination of the effects of diet composition on iron absorption and status. READ MORE

  5. 25. Analysis and speciation of organic phosphorus in environmental matrices : Development of methods to improve 31P NMR analysis

    Author : Johan Vestergren; Gröbner Gerhard; Jurgen Schleucher; Ulrik Ilstedt; Per Persson; Reiner Giesler; Benjamin L. Turner; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phosphorus; soil; 31P NMR; NaOH EDTA; terrestrial; sulfide; speciation; bioavailability; paramagnetic; humus; boreal; tropical; multi-dimensional; agroforestry; chronosequence; fysikalisk kemi; Physical Chemistry;

    Abstract : Phosphorus (P) is an essential element for life on our planet. It is central in numerous biochemical processes in terrestrial and aqueous ecosystems including food production; and it is the primary growth-limiting nutrient in some of the world’s biomes. READ MORE
