  1. 1. Cell-protein-material Interactions on Bioceramics and Model Surfaces

    Author : Åsa Rosengren; Sven Oscarsson; Lucy Di Silvio; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemistry; protein adsorption; blood proteins; biomaterials; ceramics; glass-ceramics; two-dimensional gel electrophoresis; protein orientation; silicon wafers; atomic force microscopy; bone cell adhesion; divalent cation dependency; Kemi; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis was to investigate and characterize the interaction between blood proteins and different surfaces with emphasis on protein adsorption to bioceramics and model surfaces. Special effort was made to monitor the spontaneous and selective adsorption of proteins from human plasma and to examine the orientation, conformation and functional behavior of single proteins after adsorption. 2. 2. Spark plasma sintered ZrO2-SiO2 glass ceramics and Si3N4 bioceramics

    Author : Le Fu; Wei Xia; Håkan Engqvist; Jérôme Chevalier; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ZrO2-SiO2 glass ceramic; high-strength; translucency; 3D nano-architecture; Si3N4 bioceramic; biodegradable; spark plasma sintering; Materialvetenskap; Materials Science;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on elaboration and characterization of two types of bioceramics: one is ZrO2-SiO2 nanocrystalline glass ceramic (NCGC) for dental application. The goal is to develop new ZrO2-SiO2 NCGCs with a combination of high strength and high translucency; the other is biodegradable Si3N4 ceramics for spinal fusion. READ MORE

  3. 3. On Bone Regeneration in Porous Bioceramics - Studies in humans and rabbits using free form fabricated scaffolds

    Author : Johan Malmström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : bone regeneration; hydroxyapatite; zirconia; macroporosity; microporosity; free form fabrication; focused ion beam; scanning electron microscopy; transmission electron microscopy; rabbit; human;

    Abstract : The objective of the present thesis was to evaluate the effect of material chemistry and macroand micro-porosity on bone regeneration in association with synthetic, porous ceramic materials. Ceramic scaffolds were designed and manufactured for experimental and human studies using free form fabrication (FFF), a technique which produces the object layer by layer using data from CAD files. 5. 5. Zirconia as a biomaterial for odontological applications : effects of composition and manufacturing processes on fracture resistance

    Author : Anders Sundh; Göran Sjögren; Krister Nilner; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : CAD CAM; ceramics; HIPing; Mg-PSZ; veneering; Y-TZP; zirconia;

    Abstract : Background: Ceramics have long been amongst the most biocompatible materials known but their mechanical properties have limited their use. During the past few decades zirconia has aroused particular interest as a biomaterial because of its greater flexural strength, fracture resistance and toughness compared to other bioceramics.
