  1. 1. Polyporoid fungi of Tanzania : Taxonomy, transcriptomics and biochemical analyses of Kusaghiporia usambarensis and Piptoporellus baudonii

    Author : Juma Mahmud Hussein; Sanja Tibell Savić; Donatha Tibuhwa; Christina Wedén; Ulf Göransson; Jan Stenlid; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Systematics; Laetiporaceae; pharmacognosy; cysteine-rich peptide; baudonii; Biology with specialization in Systematics; Biologi med inriktning mot systematik;

    Abstract : Polyporoid fungi refers to basidiomycetes with fruiting bodies with the hymenium located to the inner surfaces of pores or narrow tubes. The majority of polyporoids belongs to Polyporales. Most Polyporales are saprobes, but some are plant pathogens. READ MORE

  2. 2. Characterization of PAC-contaminated soil with the focus on availability, leachability and biological activities

    Author : Monika M. Lam; Magnus Engwall; Maria Larsson; Patrik Andersson; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polycyclic aromatic compounds; Availability; Mobility; Soil; Risk assessment; AhR-mediated activity; ER-mediated activity;

    Abstract : Current risk assessments of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs)-contaminated soil are often based on the 16 priority PAHs and do not consider availability of PACs in soil sufficiently. This may lead to uncertainties of the assessment, since important contaminants can be overlooked and only a small fraction of contaminants is available for the uptake for organisms. READ MORE

  3. 3. Microcalorimetric methods for direct measurement of solubility and solvent activity

    Author : Dennis Berling; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; enthalpy of solution; solubility; solvent fugacity; solvent activity; Isothermal calorimetry; vapour pressure; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : New calorimetric methods for direct measurement of solubility and solvent activity are presented. The classical role of calorimetry for measurements of enthalpic parameters is abandoned and the technique is instead used for assessing thermodynamic quantities related to the chemical potential of a substance in a solution. 4. 4. The discovery of antiviral compounds targeting adenovirus and herpes simplex virus : assessment of synthetic compounds and natural products

    Author : Mårten Strand; Göran Wadell; Mikael Elofsson; Ya-Fang Mei; Lieve Naesens; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; virology; antiviral; adenovirus; herpes simplex virus; small molecule; inhibitor; hsv; drug discovery; medicinsk virologi; Medical Virology; datorlingvistik; computational linguistics; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : There is a need for new antiviral drugs. Especially for the treatment of adenovirus infections, since no approved anti-adenoviral drugs are available. Adenovirus infections in healthy persons are most often associated with respiratory disease, diarrhea and infections of the eye. These infections can be severe, but are most often self-limiting. 5. 5. Environmental pollutants and the reproductive system in birds : Developmental effects of estrogenic compounds

    Author : Cecilia Berg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Avian embryo; test system; xeno-estrogen; endocrine disruption; reproductive organ differentiation; oviduct; testis; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Ecotoxicology; ekotoxikologi;

    Abstract : A number of environmental pollutants have been shown to mimick the action of the female sex hormone estrogen and are, therefore, suspected to be responsible for reproductive abnormalities seen in wildlife. Test systems which can be used in hazard and risk assessment of chemicals with estrogenic effects are consequently needed. READ MORE
