  1. 1. Data Analysis and Next Generation Sequencing : Applications in Microbiology

    Author : Nicolas Innocenti; Erik Aurell; Mogens Jensen; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; RNA-seq; tagRNA-seq; primary and processed RNA; Enterococcus faecalis; Complex transcription; Metagenomics; 5 tagRACE; minimal absent words; compressed sensing; metagenomics; bacterial community reconstruction; Biologisk fysik; Biological Physics;

    Abstract : Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is a new technology that has revolutionized the way we study living organisms. Where previously only a few genes could be studied at a time through targeted direct probing, NGS offers the possibility to perform measurements for a whole genome at once. READ MORE

  2. 2. High-throughput DNA Sequencingin Microbial Ecology : Methods and Applications

    Author : Luisa Hugerth; Anders Andersson; Jeroen Raes; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microbial ecology; Baltic Sea; Next-generation sequencing; Amplicon sequencing; Metagenomics; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : Microorganisms play central roles in planet Earth’s geochemical cycles, in food production, and in health and disease of humans and livestock. In spite of this, most microbial life forms remain unknown and unnamed, their ecological importance and potential technological applications beyond the realm of speculation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Cyclic peptides as biological tools : Applications for diagnosis and therapeutics in rheumatoid arthritis and COVID-19

    Author : Camilla Eriksson; Ulf Göransson; Sunithi Gunasekera; Christian Becker; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Scaffold peptides; peptide grafting; rheumatoid arthritis; SARS-CoV-2; autoantibodies; peptide synthesis; pharmacognosy;

    Abstract : The overall aims of the projects included in this thesis were to design, synthesize and evaluate cyclic peptide scaffolds grafted with biological epitopes for their ability to bind antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis and COVID-19 sera. One of the main outcomes of this thesis was the observation that scaffold peptides grafted with target epitopes efficiently neutralized anti-citrullinated protein autoantibodies (ACPA) from rheumatoid arthritis patients. 4. 4. Population viability analysis for plants : practical recommendations and applications

    Author : Satu Ramula; Kari Lehtilä; Patrik Dinnétz; Esa Ranta; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; demography; matrix population models; population viability analysis; population growth rate; stochastic models; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Population viability analysis (PVA) is commonly used in conservation biology to predict population viability in terms of population growth rate and risk of extinction. However, large data requirements limit the use of PVA for many rare and threatened species. READ MORE

  5. 5. Crystallography in Four Dimensions : Methods and Applications

    Author : Gunilla Carlsson; Janos Hajdu; Dieter Oesterhelt; Vilmos Fülöp; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biophysics; horseradish peroxidase; redox reactions; X-ray crystallography; haem catalysis; molecular movies; radiation damage; Molekylär biofysik; Molecular biophysics; Molekylär biofysik;

    Abstract : The four-electron reduction of dioxygen to water is the most exothermic non-photochemical reaction available to biology. A detailed molecular description of this reaction is needed to understand oxygen-based redox processes. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is a haem-containing redox enzyme capable of catalysing the reduction of dioxygen to water. READ MORE
