  1. 1. Transmigration of Toxoplasma gondii across biological barriers

    Author : Emily C. Ross; Antonio Barragan; Ildiko Rita Dunay; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Apicomplexa; blood-brain barrier; leukocyte; immune cell; transendothelial migration; cell adhesion molecule; host-pathogen; FAK; integrin; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite that can likely infect all warm-blooded vertebrates, with estimates of up to 30% of the global human population being infected. Although infection with T. gondii is usually asymptomatic or mild, in immunocompromised individuals infection can lead to lethal toxoplasmic encephalitis. READ MORE

  2. 2. Computational modeling of biological barriers

    Author : Christian Wennberg; Erik Lindahl; Thomas Cheatham; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular dynamics; cholesterol; lipid bilayer; permeability; long-range interactions; Lennard-Jones; dispersion; particle-mesh Ewald; stratum corneum; skin formation; Biological Physics; Biologisk fysik;

    Abstract : One of the most important aspects for all life on this planet is the act to keep their biological processes in a state where they do not reach equilibrium. One part in the upholding of this imbalanced state is the barrier between the cells and their surroundings, created by the cell membrane. READ MORE

  3. 3. Evolutionary Dynamics of Mutation and Gene Transfer in Bacteria

    Author : Peter A Lind; Dan I Andersson; J. Arjan G. M. de Visser; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fitness cost; bacterial evolution; gene amplification; mutational biases; GC content; synonymous substitutions; horizontal gene transfer; experimental evolution; Bacteriology; Bakteriologi; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Genetics; Genetik; Biology; Biologi; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : The study of bacterial evolution is fundamental for addressing current problems of antibiotic resistance and emerging infectious diseases and lays a solid foundation for successful and rational design in biotechnology and synthetic biology. The main aim of this thesis is to test evolutionary hypotheses, largely based on theoretical considerations and sequence analysis, by designing scenarios in a laboratory setting to obtain experimental data. 4. 4. The intestinal epithelium of salmonids : transepithelial transport, barrier function and bacterial interactions

    Author : Fredrik Jutfelt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Epithelial barrier function; smoltification; cortisol; osmoregulation; Aeromonas salmonicida; Atlantic salmon; rainbow trout; bacterial translocation; intestine; Ussing chamber; vegetable lipids;

    Abstract : The salmonid intestinal epithelium is important for growth and health of the fish. The epithelium is exposed to a multitude of internal and external factors that can influence its function. READ MORE

  5. 5. Chronic stress and intestinal barrier function: Implications for infection and inflammation in intensive salmon aquaculture

    Author : Henrik Sundh; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Intestinal barrier function; stress; cortisol; Ussing chamber; welfare; health; inflammation; neutrophils; cytokines; chronic stress;

    Abstract : Aquaculture is a fast growing food-producing sector worldwide. This has increased the awareness among the public as well as governments of the need to secure the welfare and health of farmed fish. Atlantic salmon is, in non-Asian countries, one of the most successful aquacultured species. READ MORE
