11. Large-scale releases of native species : the mallard as a predictive model system
Abstract : Human alteration of natural systems, and its consequences are of great concern and the impact on global ecosystems is one of the biggest threats that biodiversity stands before. Translocations of invasive species, as well as intraspecific contingents with non-native genotypes, whether they are deliberate or unintentional, are one such alteration and its consequences are continuously being assessed. 12. Bayesian Phylogenetics and the Evolution of Gall Wasps
Abstract : This thesis concerns the phylogenetic relationships and the evolution of the gall-inducing wasps belonging to the family Cynipidae. Several previous studies have used morphological data to reconstruct the evolution of the family. READ MORE

13. MULTIFOCAL SPHERICAL FISH LENSES
Abstract : Vision is an important source of information for many animals. The lens plays a central role in the visual pathway and hence the ecology of these animals. Fish have spherically shaped crystalline lenses that contain a gradient of refractive index. Like all refracting elements, lens performance depends on the wavelength of the refracted light. READ MORE

14. Nitrogen removal in treatment wetlands : Factors influencing spatial and temporal variations
Abstract : Decreasing the nitrogen transport from land to surrounding seas is a major task throughout the world to limit eutrophication of the coastal areas. Several approaches are currently used, including the establishment of wetlands, to decrease the transport of nitrogen. READ MORE

15. Phylogenetic Relationships, Biogeography and Species Delimitation: A case study on southern African Silene (Caryophyllaceae)
Abstract : The primary aim of this thesis was to explore the phylogenetic relationships and historical biogeography of African members of the plant genus Silene (Caryophyllaceae), with special focus on the eight native southern African taxa. Three loci (the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region, and the rps16 and matK regions from the plastid genome) generated using traditional Sanger sequencing were used to infer the phylogenetic positions of African taxa, while sequence data from 28 low copy nuclear loci were generated using the target capture method to explore shallow phylogenetic relationships within southern African taxa.
