  1. 11. The role of benthic macrofauna in nitrogen cycling in eutrophic lake sediment

    Author : Jonas Martin Svensson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nitrogen retention; nitrous oxide; oligochaetes; chironomids; mineralisation; nitrification; denitrification; eutrophic; sediment; lake; Macrofauna; nitrogen cycling; fish reduction.; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the role of sediment-living macrobenthos in the cycling of nitrogen species and nitrogen transformation in eutrophic freshwater sediments. In my thesis I have, employing 15N-isotope techniques in laboratory experiments, shown the importance of infaunal chironomid larvae and oligochaetes on denitrification in eutrophic lake sediments. 2. 12. Microalgal solutions in Nordic conditions : industries transition toward resource recovery?

    Author : Lina Mattsson; Catherine Legrand; Elin Lindehoff; Hanna Farnelid; Kristian Spilling; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microalgae; algal cultivation; polyculture; resource recovery; seasonal variation; industrial partnership; CO2 mitigation; nitrogen removal; community composition; Ecology; Ekologi; Environmental Biotechnology; Miljöbioteknik; Miljövetenskap; Environmental Science; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Microalgal solutions can through photosynthesis recover greenhouse gas (CO2) and nutrients from industrial waste, reducing climate footprint and eutrophication. An added value to the process is algal biomass containing lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates with commercial potential for biofuel, feed, and fertilizer. READ MORE

  3. 13. Anammox-based systems for nitrogen removal from mainstream municipal wastewater

    Author : Andriy Malovanyy; Elzbieta Plaza; Adriano Joss; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Wastewater; Nitrogen removal; Ion exchange; Deammonification; Anammox; Mainstream; Mark- och vattenteknik; Land and Water Resources Engineering;

    Abstract : Nitrogen removal from municipal wastewater with the application of deammonification process offers an operational cost reduction, especially if it is combined with a maximal use of organic content of wastewater for biogas production. In this thesis, two approaches for integration of the deammonification process into the municipal wastewater treatment scheme were studied. READ MORE

  4. 14. Use of chemical denitrification for nitrogen removal from landfill leachates

    Author : Aleksandra Nikolic; KTH; []
    Keywords : Chemical denitrification; conductivity; evaporation drying; freezing thawing; leachate; nitrogen removal;

    Abstract : Landfill leachate usually has a high concentration ofammonium nitrogen and heavy metals, but too low alkalinitycontent for full biological nitrification, as well as a too lowconcentration of biologically degradable organic carbon forbiological denitrification, and at the same time very variablecomposition (quantity and quality) with time. These factorsresult in serious problems for treating leachate with existingsystems. READ MORE
