  1. 1. Localized Prostate Cancer : Results From a Randomized Clinical Trial

    Author : Anna Bill-Axelson; Lars Holmberg; Bo Johan Norlén; Peter Wiklund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; prostate cancer; localized; randomized; biopsies; interviews; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : The aims of the thesis were to• explore whether radical prostatectomy is beneficial compared with watchful waiting in survival and disease progression• find possible effect modifiers• evaluate a protocol of multiple biopsies and investigate if men with previous benign prostate biopsies are a group at risk for later prostate cancer• inquire into patients’ and clinicians’ experiences of randomization in order to find out what made this study possible to conduct, and thereby contribute to improve randomization in the futureThe background material was a large randomized clinical trial, the Scandinavian Prostatic Cancer Group Study Number 4, or SPCG-4, which was open for inclusion from February 1989 through December 1999. It comprised 695 men in Sweden, Finland and Iceland who had localized prostate cancer and were randomized to either radical prostatectomy or watchful waiting. READ MORE

  2. 2. Immunohistological studies on muscle biopsies : clinical and pathogenetic aspects on inflammatory myopathies

    Author : Björn Lindvall; Göran Solders; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Inflammatory myopathies constitute a heterogeneous group of disorders comprising polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM), inclusion body myositis (IBM), as well as overlap syndromes where inflammatory myopathy is associated with different inflammatory systemic diseases, e.g, Sjögren's syndrome. 3. 3. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using semitendinosus and gracilis autograft. Evaluation of the clinical outcome, radiographic findings, histology and biochemistry

    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anterior Cruciate Ligament; hamstring tendon regeneration; biopsies; cartilage markers; inflammatory cytokines; MRI; strenght measurements;

    Abstract : The present thesis focuses on different aspects of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using hamstring tendon (HT) autografts. In Study I, two groups of patients were compared. READ MORE

  4. 4. Recurrent Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer

    Author : Sigurdur Gudjonsson; Urologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; early instillation; biopsies; biomarkers; recurrence; bladder cancer; non-muscle-invasive; tissue microarray; gene-expression;

    Abstract : A characteristic feature of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is the high risk of recurrent disease after primary treatment. Although only a minority of cases eventually progress to a life-threatening muscle-invasive tumour, it is necessary to conduct long-term follow-up with repeated cystoscopies. READ MORE
