  1. 11. Flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy : studies on methods for the diagnosis of carcinoma of the lung, bronchial mucosal damage and haemodynamic effects

    Author : Rune Lundgren; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy; bronchial carcinoma; brush biopsy; respiratory mucosal damage; regeneration; mucociliary clearance; haemodynamic effects; hypoxemia;

    Abstract : The diagnostic accuracy attained with the use of transbronchial fine needle aspiration biopsy, aspiration of bronchial secretion, bronchial washing, brush biopsy and forceps biopsy via a flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope was compared in patients with carcinoma of the lung. In endoscopic visible tumours the sensitivity of forceps biopsy was higher than that of the other methods. READ MORE

  2. 12. Positioning Biopsy Needles in the Prostate Gland Using 3D Computer Modelling

    Author : Hans Frimmel; Ewert Bengtsson; Björn Gudmundsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Computerized Image Analysis; Datoriserad bildanalys;

    Abstract : In the world of medicine, image diagnostics have, until recently, been based merely on two dimensional information sources. The understanding of three dimensional structures has been limited to creating mental images in the mind of the physician, to wax models and to autopsy. READ MORE

  3. 13. Minimally-invasive breast interventions : methods for high yield, low risk, precision biopsy and curative thermal ablation

    Author : Kai-Uwe Schässburger; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Advances in medical imaging and the introduction of population-based screening programs have increased the detection rate and overall proportion of small breast tumors. In addition, progress in technology and medical science, in combination with efforts to minimize morbidity, have resulted in the emergence of minimally invasive image-guided interventional procedures for both diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. 4. 14. Hormones and breast cancer : aspects on receptor expression and metabolism

    Author : Lars Löfgren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Breast cancer; fine needle aspiration biopsy; tamoxifen; megestrol acetate; SHBG; sex steroid hormone receptors; Syndecan-1;

    Abstract : Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women in the western world. Sex steroid hormones are implied as risk factors but endocrine regimens are also used in the therapy of breast cancer. Current knowledge about the endocrine and metabolic effects of different treatments is incomplete. READ MORE

  5. 15. Testosterone and the postmenopausal breast : aspects on cell proliferation and mammographic density

    Author : Marie Hofling; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Menopause; testosterone; breast cell proliferation; fine needle aspiration biopsy; mammographic density; Syndecan-1; androgen receptor; cynomolgus macaques;

    Abstract : The breast is a target organ for sex steroids, and hormonal treatments have been associated with a risk of breast cancer. There is increasing interest in androgen treatment for postmenopausal women. Testosterone has been shown to improve bone density, body composition, mood, psychosexual function and general well-being.
