26. Production, Purification and Characterization of Antimicrobial Biomolecules from Potential Probiotic Lactic Acid Bacteria
Abstract : Development and optimization of the production of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and their attendant 'natural' inhibitors as biopreservatives to control undesirable bacteria currently remains a primary focus of several laboratories involved in research concerning food safety and quality. Strategies utilized to study incorporation of biopreservatives into food include either direct use of LAB-strains or use of a biopreservative preparation in the form of previously fermented product or use of semipurified, purified, or chemically synthesized bacteriocins. 27. Solar-based physicochemical-biological processes for the treatment of toxic and recalcitrant effluents
Abstract : Wastewater treatment is a worldwide necessity that is even more crucial to countries deprived from abundant fresh water sources or unable to afford advanced and costly processes. With this perspective, this thesis was conducted within an Egyptian-Swedish research collaboration that aimed to develop solar-based (as free renewable energy source available locally) process for hazardous wastewater treatment. 28. Improving selectivity in protein extraction by subtle interactions and environmental changes
Abstract : The challenges for efficient bioprocesses lie in developing and adapting further current technologies or in creating innovative separation technologies. The thesis is based on the studies on protein recovery from crude feedstocks by extraction in aqueous two-phase systems and detergent foam, respectively. READ MORE

29. Protection of Biomolecules by Antioxidants - Mechanisms and Applications
Abstract : Reactive oxygen species (ROS) consisting of various oxygen-based free radicals as well as other reactive non-radical species produced in O2-related metabolism or through other processes are involved in the oxidation of such vital biomolecules as DNA, proteins and lipids. The types of oxidation represented here are known to cause many different diseases and disorders in human beings, such as cancer, Alzheimer's disease and ageing. READ MORE

30. Innovative Bioreactors for the Degradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
Abstract : The development of biological reactors for the treatment of toxic and recalcitrant organic pollutants is a complex task. Firstly, microbial inoculation, acclimation and selection must be optimized to provide the best microflora possible. READ MORE
