21. An integrated approach to study pharmaceuticals and their microbial transformation products: formation and environmental behavior in water/sediment systems
Abstract : Pharmaceuticals are emerging organic micropollutants that are frequently detected in the aquatic environment. While information on their environmental occurrence is substantial, knowledge gaps exist with respect to their environmental transformation. READ MORE

22. Evolution and Ecology of AhR genes in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.)
Abstract : In vertebrates, studies of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) have been of particular interest due to its direct involvement in the toxic effects exerted by several environmental pollutants, such as PCB and dioxin. After binding to the toxic molecule, this receptor initiates transcription of several genes that are part of the biotransformation battery but most notably the cytochrome P450 (CYP) genes, which results in an excessive release of oxidative enzymes and free radicals. 23. Remediation of TNT-contaminated water by using industrial low-cost residue pine bark
Abstract : In the process of demilitarization of explosives, army ammunition plants generate a waste stream known as pink water. The principal component of the wastewater is the nitro-aromatic compound 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). READ MORE

24. Chemical transformation of the anticancer drug oxaliplatin
Abstract : Oxaliplatin is a new platinum based cytostatic drug. It is used in combination with 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin, both as palliative and adjuvant treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. Various biotransformation products are formed non-enzymatically after oxaliplatin administration. READ MORE

25. Gene expression in buccal keratinocytes with emphasis on carbonyl metabolism
Abstract : The inner lining of the cheek, the buccal mucosa, is a target for air-borne, dietary and tobacco usage-derived carcinogens, but also interesting from a drug delivery point of view. Cancer arising in the buccal epithelium, buccal squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC), often diagnosed at a late disease stage, is highly aggressive and recurrent, emphasizing the need for novel approaches in diagnosis and therapy.
