  1. 1. String Theory at the Horizon : Quantum Aspects of Black Holes and Cosmology

    Author : Martin Olsson; Ulf Danielsson; Lárus Thorlacius; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Theoretical physics; theoretical physics; string theory; black holes; cosmology; de Sitter space; c=1 matrix models; 2D string theory; topological string theory; conifolds; 4D BPS black holes; Gödel universe; closed time-like curves; Teoretisk fysik; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : String theory is a unified framework for general relativity and quantum mechanics, thus being a theory of quantum gravity. In this thesis we discuss various aspects of quantum gravity for particular systems, having in common the existence of horizons. READ MORE

  2. 2. New horizons in string theory : bubble babble in search of darkness

    Author : Suvendu Giri; Ulf Danielsson; Bert Vercnocke; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; String theory; black holes; dark energy; de Sitter; cosmological constant; M-theory; braneworld; anti de Sitter; Theoretical Physics; Teoretisk fysik;

    Abstract : It was discovered nearly two decades ago that we live in an accelerating universe that is dominated by dark energy. Understanding the origin of such an energy has turned out to be a very difficult open question in physics, and calls on the need for a fundamental theory like string theory. READ MORE

  3. 3. A Kerr-full Study of Higher-Spin Amplitudes : An on-shell construction of higher-spin amplitudes for black holes and strings

    Author : Paolo Pichini; Henrik Johansson; Donal O'Connell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; scattering amplitudes; higher-spin theory; black holes; string theory; gravitational waves; Theoretical Physics; Teoretisk fysik;

    Abstract : Recently, it was shown that Kerr black holes can be described via the classical infinite-spin limit of a special class of scattering amplitudes in a massive higher-spin quantum field theory. Although this approach has successfully obtained state-of-the-art results for spinning black-hole binaries, only the three-point amplitude that describes Kerr is known in full generality and a full understanding of the underlying Lagrangian is still missing. 4. 4. Topics on D-branes and Holography

    Author : Mikael Smedbäck; Joseph Minahan; Anton Alekseev; Paolo Di Vecchia; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Theoretical physics; theoretical physics; string theory; D-branes; dualities; AdS CFT; spin chains; Bethe ansatz; boundary conformal field theory; conformal bootstrap; tachyon condensation; string field theory; loop quantum gravity; black holes; area spectrum; Hawking radiation; holographic principle; Teoretisk fysik; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : We discuss various aspects of D-branes in string theory and holography in string theory and loop quantum gravity.One way to study D-branes is from a microscopic perspective, using conformal field theory techniques. For example, we investigate the question of how D-branes can be introduced into orbifolded theories. READ MORE

  5. 5. Pierced, Wrapped and Torn : Aspects of String Theory Compactifications

    Author : Magdalena Larfors; Ulf Danielsson; Gary Shiu; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mathematical physics; Matematisk fysik; Theoretical Physics; teoretisk fysik;

    Abstract : An outstanding problem in physics is to find a unified framework for quantum mechanics and general relativity. This is required for a better understanding of black holes and the early cosmology of the universe. String theory provides such a unification. In this thesis, we study aspects of compactifications of type IIB string theory. READ MORE
