  1. 1. Experimental Bladder Reconstruction

    Author : Hans Frederiksen; Urologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Urology; smooth muscle; detrusor; matrix; nerves; subtotal cystectomy; bladder regeneration; enterocystoplasty; nephrology; Urologi; nefrologi;

    Abstract : Reduced urinary bladder capacity is a clinically significant problem. The surgical methods that have been available to treat this, such as urinary diversion or surgically augmenting the bladder by incorporation of intestinal segments, all have serious drawbacks. READ MORE

  2. 2. In vitro and in vivo studies on biodegradable matrices for autotransplantation

    Author : Carl-Johan Gustafson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : In vitro; in vivo; dermis; matrix; autotransplantation; culture; keratinocytes; urothelium; tissue engineering; PUUR; macroporous spheres ; guided tissue regeneration;

    Abstract : Tissue engineering (TE), one of the most rapidly growing fields of life science, is an interdisciplinary area in which technical, biological and medical expertise co-fertilize on another with the ultimate aim of restoring, maintaining or improving tissues and/or organs. This purpose links TE closely to research concerning reconstructive plastic surgery. READ MORE

  3. 3. Cell therapy for spinal cord injury, studies of motor and sensory systems

    Author : Christoph Hofstetter; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Nervous system; spinal cord injury; pseudorabies virus; axonal tracing; functional MRI; stereology; Rho-kinases; transplantation; stem cells; neurogenin2; allodynia;

    Abstract : Spinal cord injury represents a significant medical concern, affecting thousands of individuals each year. The majority of victims are young males harmed by traffic accidents, violence, and falls. Severe spinal cord injury interupts nerve fiber pathways connecting the brain and the rest of the body. 4. 4. Experimental spinal cord injury : development of protection and repair strategies in rats

    Author : Matthias Erschbamer; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Spinal cord injury typically results in neurological deficits that can not be reversed, often leaving patients bound to a wheelchair. Current treatment strategies are not very successful. Despite many promising experimental strategies, clinical translation has so far been very limited. READ MORE

  5. 5. Spinal cord injury : mechanical and molecular aspects

    Author : Anna Josephson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Spinal cord; syringomyelia; MRI; fMRI; neurotrophin; Nogo; Nogo receptor; regulation;

    Abstract : Traumatic spinal cord injury leads to full or partial paralysis and loss of sensation below the level of injury. The annual incidence of spinal cord injury in the United States is 3-5 per 100,000 and in Sweden is 1.5-2 per 100,000. This translates to 11,000 new cases of traumatic spinal cord injury in the US and 150 in Sweden each year. READ MORE
