  1. 21. Segmentation and Visualisation of Human Brain Structures

    Author : Roger Hult; Ewert Bengtsson; Lennart Thurfjell; Håkan Hall; Ingrid Agartz; Arvid Lundervold; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bildanalys; segmentation; visualisation; brain; cortex; hippocampus; autoradiography; MRI; PET; ROI; Bildanalys; Image analysis; Bildanalys; Computerized Image Analysis; datoriserad bildanalys;

    Abstract : In this thesis the focus is mainly on the development of segmentation techniques for human brain structures and of the visualisation of such structures. The images of the brain are both anatomical images (magnet resonance imaging (MRI) and autoradigraphy) and functional images that show blood flow (functional magnetic imaging (fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and single photon emission tomograpy (SPECT)). 2. 22. Experimental Traumatic Brain Injury and Cell Death - in vivo and in vitro aspects

    Author : Gustav Mattiasson; Sektion IV; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neurofysiologi; neuropsychology; Neurology; uncoupling protein; mitochondrial permeability transition; cerebral blood flow; functional outcome; cell death; mitochondria; hippocampus; preconditioning; trauma; Brain; ischemia; neuropsykologi; Neurologi; neurophysiology;

    Abstract : Traumatic and ischemic brain damage are major causes of disability and death. While much effort has been spent on developing pharmacological treatments for these conditions, no neuroprotective drugs are in clinical use. READ MORE

  3. 23. Social Phobia. From Epidemiology to Brain Function

    Author : Tomas Furmark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Psychology; Anxiety; brain; epidemiology; fear; neuroimaging; neurotransmitters; positron emission tomography; prevalence; serotonin; social phobia; subtypes; treatment; Psykologi; Psychology; Psykologi; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : Social phobia is a disabling anxiety disorder characterized by an excessive fear of negative evaluation in social situations. The present thesis explored the epidemiology and neurobiology of the disorder. By means of a mailed questionnaire, the point prevalence of social phobia in the Swedish general population was estimated at 15.6%. READ MORE

  4. 24. Human brain function evaluated with rCBF-SPECT : memory and pain related changes and new diagnostic possibilities in Alzheimer’s disease

    Author : Torbjörn Sundström; Katrine Riklund; Rimma Danielsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; brain imaging; rCBF; SPECT; early diagnosis; brain atlas; HMPAO; Alzheimer´s disease; Whiplash; neuropsychological function; episodic memory; Diagnostic radiology; Diagnostisk radiologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this doctoral thesis was to study the influence of memory, pain, age and education on the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), i.e. brain function, in early Alzheimer's disease (AD) and in chronic neck pain patients in comparison to healthy controls and in healthy elderly per se. 5. 25. Pericyte Influence on Drug Delivery Across the Blood-Brain Barrier : Implications for Therapy of Neurodegenerative Diseases

    Author : Nebojsa Mihajlica; Margareta Hammarlund-Udenaes; Christer Betsholtz; William Elmquist; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Blood-brain barrier; pericytes; pericyte-deficiency; pharmacokinetics; small-molecular drugs; drug distribution; transporters; P-glycoprotein; tyrosine kinase inhibitors; Farmakokinetik och läkemedelsterapi; Pharmacokinetics and Drug Therapy;

    Abstract : The blood-brain barrier (BBB) represents a complex interface between the brain parenchyma and systemic blood circulation, strictly controlling exchange of substances between the two sites. Pericytes are mural cells located on the abluminal membrane of the brain endothelium, involved in BBB formation and maintenance. READ MORE
