  1. 21. Identification and characterisation of SMIM1 variants determining the Vel blood group

    Author : Mikael Kronborg Christophersen; Avdelningen för hematologi och transfusionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Blood groups; Vel blood group system; genetic variation; transcriptional regulation;

    Abstract : The Vel blood group antigen is present on red blood cells from all humans except rare Vel-negative individuals, who can form antibodies to Vel in response to transfusion or pregnancy. It was first described in 1952 as a high incidence antigen, while the molecular background was recently discovered to be a 17-bp deletion in Small Integral Membrane Protein 1, that causes a frame-shift mutation and abolishes SMIM1 expression, thus creating a Vel-negative phenotype. 2. 22. Importance of renal function in cardiac surgery

    Author : Alain Dardashti; Thoraxkirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Acute kidney injury; eGFR; Transfusion; Mortality; Erythropoietin; Cardiac surgery;

    Abstract : Abstract Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common and serious complication after cardiothoracic surgery and is associated with increased short- and long-term mortality risk. Despite extensive studies in the field, a comprehensive understanding of this syndrome has remained elusive, partly due to divergent definitions of AKI and partly due to the limitations of available routine biomarkers to predict, prevent, and detect AKI. 3. 23. Modulation of Inflammatory Response in Surgical Trauma

    Author : Andreas Kvarnström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; inflammatory response; cytokines; complement activation; colorectal surgery; laparoscopy; inhalation anesthesia; intravenous anesthesia; autologous blood transfusion;

    Abstract : Surgical trauma results in the activation of inflammatory cascade systems in the body. Excessive systemic inflammation can lead to organ dysfunction in one or several organs. READ MORE

  5. 25. Characterisation of weak and null phenotypes in the KEL and JK blood group systems

    Author : Elisabet Sjöberg Wester; Avdelningen för hematologi och transfusionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; null; SNP; Kidd; JK; Blood group; Kell; KEL; weak;

    Abstract : The focus of this thesis is on KEL and JK, two clinically important blood group systems, and the investigations of blood samples with aberrant antigen expression as in null and weak phenotypes, or with a phenotype that does not correspond to genotype. With the increasing use of DNA assays based on single nucleotide polymorphisms for blood group prediction, it is important to characterize the blood-groupencoding genes. READ MORE
