  1. 11. Bone density, bone geometry and bone development in young men - the importance of pubertal timing and fracture history

    Author : Anna Darelid; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; peak bone mass; bone mineral density; bone development; fracture; young adulthood; men;

    Abstract : Background and objective: Peak bone mass, the maximal bone mass attained in young adulthood, is an important factor of the lifetime risk of developing osteoporosis. The aim of this thesis was to study the development of bone mineral density (BMD) and bone geometry around the time of peak bone mass in men, and also to investigate the association between pubertal timing, fracture history, bone turnover markers and BMD and bone geometry in young men. 2. 12. Osteoprotegerin in Bone Metabolism

    Author : Helena Brändström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Bone; osteoprotegerin; osteoblasts; polymorphism; cytokines; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : Bone turnover, remodeling, is a constant process replacing old bone with new. This complex cellular event involves resorption by osteoclasts and formation of new bone by osteoblasts. The balance between osteoblastic and osteoclastic activity is under regulation by several endocrine and paracrine factors. READ MORE

  3. 13. Bone mass and physical activity

    Author : Anna Nordström; Tommy Olsson; Peter Nordström; Heather McKay; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; physical activity; peak bone mineral density; males; fractures; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin; medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : Abstract Weak and osteoporotic bones in old age are an increasing cause of mortality and painful physical impairment of the elderly, especially in the western world. Bone mineral accrual during childhood and adolescence is thought to play a vital role in preventing osteoporosis. READ MORE

  4. 14. Bone Mass from Childhood to Adulthood

    Author : Christian Buttazzoni; Ortopedi - klinisk och molekylär osteoporosforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bone Mass Peak Bone Mass Childood Adulthood;

    Abstract : Attaining high peak bone mass (PBM), the highest bone mass value in life which is reached in young adulthood, is important as it reduces the risk of having low bone mass in old age69, 80. Low bone mass is associated with high fracture risk3, 60. Osteoporosis is the result of bone loss, a physiological process related to aging and/or low PBM. READ MORE

  5. 15. Physical activity and regional bone mass

    Author : Håkan Magnusson; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; orthopaedics; Surgery; medial tibial stress syndrome; hip fracture; weight-loaded and unloded skeletal regions; physical activity; Bone mineral density; dual X-ray absorptiometry; ortopedi; Kirurgi; traumatology; traumatologi;

    Abstract : This thesis considers the effect of physical activity on bone mass in weight-loaded and unloaded regions of the skeleton. Bone mass was measured by Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) and by Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS). READ MORE
