  1. 21. Bone and fat tissue in children and adolescents: studies with focus on osteocalcin

    Author : Bojan Tubić; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; osteocalcin; obesity; adiponectin; carboxylation; anorexia nervosa; paediatric; bone turnover markers; bone mass; whole body vibration; muscle;

    Abstract : The general AIM was to investigate the possible interplay between bone and fat tissue through clinical studies of children and adolescents. Osteocalcin (OC), a bone formation marker, has been proposed to act as a link between bone and energy metabolism in mice, but human data are inconclusive. READ MORE

  2. 22. Novel Insights into Inflammatory Disturbed Bone Remodelling

    Author : Elin Kindstedt; Pernilla Lundberg; Östen Ljunggren; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bone; osteoblast; osteoclast; chemokines; CCL11; periodontitis; rheumatoid arthritis; innate lympoid cells; odontologi; Odontology; immunologi; Immunology; biology; biologi; reumatologi; rheumatology;

    Abstract : Bone is a dynamic tissue that is continuously remodelled, a process that requires equal amounts of osteoclastic bone resorption and osteoblastic bone formation. Inflammation may disturb the equilibrium and result in local and/or systemic bone loss. Negative bone mass balance occurs in several chronic inflammatory diseases, e.g. READ MORE

  3. 23. The role of physical activity on bone density and bone geometry in men

    Author : Martin Nilsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : bone mineral density; bone geometry; trabecular microarchitecture; physical activity; men;

    Abstract : THE ROLE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY ON BONE DENSITY AND BONE GEOMETRY IN MEN Introduction: Several studies indicate that peak bone mass, reached during the third decade in life, is an important determinant of osteoporosis later in life. Physical activity with dynamic loading of the bone is an important determinant of peak bone mass. READ MORE

  4. 24. Bone Mineral Density Determination in Children. Evaluation of a novel method and application to Duchenne muscular dystrophy

    Author : Ann-Charlott Söderpalm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : adolescents; age- and gender-matched; Becker; bone densitometry; bone markers; bone mineral density; calciotropic hormones; children; DXA; DXL; Duchenne; glucocorticoids; muscular dystrophy; normative; reference values; skeleton;

    Abstract : Aims: The overall aims of this thesis were to evaluate the dual-energy X-ray and laser (DXL) method for bone densitometry measurements of the calcaneus in children, to provide reference data for bone mineral density (BMD) in the heel bone in young children and to apply the DXL technique to patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and conduct a survey about bone health of DMD patients. Study populations and methods: The DXL Calscan method was modified and adapted for measurements in children and applied to bone densitometry in all subsequent studies. READ MORE

  5. 25. Bone Metabolism in Men

    Author : Peter Gillberg; Olof Johnell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Male osteoporosis; Bone mineral density; Growth hormone; Insulin-like growth factors; Sex hormones; Growth hormone replacement; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the importance of the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system and sex steroids for male bone metabolism has been investigated, and the effects of continuous low dose GH replacement in GH deficient (GHD) adults. In a population-based sample of men, positive correlations were found between bone mineral density (BMD) and IGF-I, IGF-II, IGF binding protein (IGFBP)-3 and the testosterone/sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) ratio.
