  1. 1. Time-resolved Structural and Mechanistic Studies of Water Oxidation in Photosystem II : water here, water there, water everywhere

    Author : Casper de Lichtenberg; Johannes Messinger; Wolfgang P. Schröder; Holger Dau; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oxygenic Photosynthesis; Photosystem II; TR-MIMS; isotope exchange; EPR; EDNMR; water splitting; water oxidation;

    Abstract : Oxygenic photosynthesis is undisputedly one of the most important chemical processes for human life on earth as it not only fills the atmosphere with the oxygen that we need to breathe, but also sustains the accumulation of biomass, which is not only used as nourishment but is also present in almost every aspect of our lives as building material, textiles in clothes and furniture, or even as living decorations to name a few.The photosynthetic water-splitting mechanism is catalyzed by a water:plastoquinone oxido-reductase by the name of photosystem II (PSII), which is embedded in the thylakoid membranes of plants, algae and cyanobacteria. 2. 2. Aspects of drinking water supply in areas of humic water

    Author : Talis Juhna; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; VA-teknik; Urban Water Engineering;

    Abstract : The thesis investigated several aspects that are important for drinking water supply from waters with high amounts of humic substance (humic water). The results showed that the composition of humic substances is important in their sorption to aquifer material during surface water artificial recharge through infiltration basins to groundwater. 3. 3. Batch Sorption Studies of Aqueous Cadmium and Lead from Contaminated Water onto Selected Biosorbents

    Author : Grace Kizito Bakyayita; Ann-Catrine Norrström; Robinah N. Kulabako; Maimuna Nalubega; Roger Thunvik; Ann-Margret Hvitt Strömvall; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biosorbents; cadmium; competitive uptake; Freundlich; pseudo-second-order kinetics; Langmuir; lead; remediation; risks; speciation; toxicity effects; Mark- och vattenteknik; Land and Water Resources Engineering;

    Abstract : Groundwater, wastewater, surface runoff and surface water samples from Lake Victoria basin, Uganda was assessed for trace metals contamination. Untreated, base-treated and peroxide-treated biosorbents from Albizia coriaria, Coffea canephora, Cyperus papyrus, Erythrina abyssinica and Musa spp were investigated for removal of selected trace metals from contaminated water in batch studies. 4. 4. Arsenic in Alluvial Aquifers in the Meghna Basin, Southeastern Bangladesh : Hydrogeological and Geochemical Characterisation

    Author : Md. Aziz Hasan; Prosun Bhattacharya; William Burgess; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Alluvial aquifer; groundwater; arsenic mobilisation; geology; Meghna basin; Bangladesh; Water engineering; Vattenteknik;

    Abstract :  Elevated levels of arsenic (As) in Bangladesh groundwater has emerged as a massive calamity exposing a large population to the risk of As toxicity from drinking water sources and agricultural products. Holocene alluvial aquifers in the delta- and flood-plains of the Ganges-Brahmaputra- Meghna (GBM) river systems are severely affected by high levels of As in groundwater. READ MORE

  5. 5. Effect of hydration on thermodynamic, rheological and structural properties of mucin

    Author : Yana Znamenskaya; Malmö högskola; []
    Keywords : mucous gel; mucus; mucin; PGM; BSM; BSM chitosan multilayers; hydration; water sorption isotherm; relative humidity; water activity; bound water; enthalpy of hydration of biopolymer; glass transition; rheology; phase diagram; fiber-like structure; dumbbell-like structure; sorption calorimetry; DSC; QCM-D; SAXS; AFM;

    Abstract : Mucus, an adherent hydrated layer covering the epithelium, is found in all internal tracts of the body and plays an important role in animal and human life. One of the essential functions of mucus is protection of tissues against dehydration. READ MORE
