  1. 1. The evolution of the nuclear envelope

    Author : Nadja Neumann; Anthony Poole; Gáspár Jékely; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nuclear pore complex; bouquet; meiosis; nucleus; eukaryote evolution; nucleoporin; tree of life; stem group; recombination; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology; molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : The nucleus is one of the defining features of eukaryotes and the question of its origin is intimately linked to the evolution of the eukaryotic cell. It is delimited by a double lipid bilayer called the nuclear envelope, which separates the nuclear interior from the cytoplasm. READ MORE

  2. 2. The Ecology of Floral Signals in Penstemon digitalis

    Author : Rosalie Burdon; Amy L. Parachnowitsch; James Thomson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Antimicrobial; Bombus impatiens learning; indirect signal; multimodal; nectar; protandry; signal-reward association; Volatile Organic Compounds VOCs ; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I combined field observations and lab experiments to explore the ecological significance of floral signals in a North American wildflower, Penstemon digitalis. More specifically, to determine the potential mechanisms driving selection on floral scent, I studied how scent mediates interactions with pollinators and antagonists by (1) observing spatiotemporal variation in scent emission (2), floral volatile ability to suppress microbes (3) the honest advertisement of nectar, and (4) if scent could aid pollinator learning by reinforcing visual signals. 3. 3. Insights into the Evolution of Moth Pheromone Communication: Lessons from the European Corn Borer

    Author : Jean-Marc Lassance; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biosynthetic enzymes; evolution; Ostrinia nubilalis; mate choice; mate finding; olfaction; biosynthesis; speciation; moth; pheromone; olfactory receptors.;

    Abstract : Chemical communication by means of sex pheromones is central to the mating systems of a wide range of organisms. Because reproductive isolation is often based on pheromone differences, understanding how pheromones diverge is necessary for a complete comprehension of the speciation process. READ MORE
