1. The bowed string
Abstract : Of the many waveforms the bowed string can assume, theso-called "Helmholtz motion" (Helmholtz 1862) gives the fullestsound in terms of power and overtone richness. The developmentof this steady-state oscillation pattern can take manydifferent paths, most of which would include noise caused bystick-slip irregularities of the bow-string contact. READ MORE

2. On the control of virtual violins : Physical modelling and control of bowed string instruments
Abstract : This thesis treats the control of sound synthesis of bowed string instruments based on physical modelling. The work followed two approaches: (a) a systematic exploration of the influence of control parameters (bow force, bow velocity, and bow-bridge distance) on the output of a physical model of the violin, and (b) measurements and analyses of the bowing parameters in real violin playing in order to model and parameterize basic classes of bowing patterns for synthesis control. 3. Mechanics and acoustics of violin bowing : Freedom, constraints and control in performance
Abstract : This thesis addresses sound production in bowed-string instruments from two perspectives: the physics of the bowed string, and bow control in performance. Violin performance is characterized by an intimate connection between the player and the instrument, allowing for a continuous control of the sound via the main bowing parameters (bow velocity, bow force and bow-bridge distance), but imposing constraints as well. 4. Development of Helmholtz motion and related wave patterns in the bowed string
Abstract : Of the many wave patterns that the bowed string is capableof producing, the so-calledHelmholtz motion(Helmholtz 1862) gives the fullest sound in terms of power andovertone richness. Papers one and two of this thesis deal withthe creation of this particular string movement: The firstpaper, based on computer analysis, describes some systemparametersinfluence on the transient in terms ofplayability. 5. Machine tool vibrations and violin sound fields studied using laser vibrometry
Abstract : The knowledge of the dynamic behaviour of a milling process is very important for finding an optimum process window. In today's manufacturing industry the machining parameters are often predicted using experimental data from non-rotating spindles. READ MORE
