  1. 11. Galanin and NPY in the rodent brain: rapid effects of 17beta-estradiol and possible roles in hippocampal plasticity

    Author : Susanne Hilke; Elvar Theodorsson; Tomas Hökfelt; Bruce S. McEwen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sex-hormones; Brain; Neuropeptides; Neurochemistry; Neurokemi;

    Abstract : The neuropeptides galanin and neuropeptide Y (NPY) play an important role in the reproduction of rodents, e.g. by modulating the release of gonadal hormones, the nutritional status by effects on feeding behavior and also by influencing mating behavior. READ MORE

  2. 12. Short- and long-term neuronal plasticity in hippocampal CA1 region of rat

    Author : Fen-Sheng Huang; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; glutamate; hippocampus; plasticity; synapse; LTP; LTD; AMPA; NMDA;

    Abstract : The brain is highly plastic, displaying both short- and long-term changes, resulting from developmental processes as well as learning and memory. Moreover, short-term plasticity such as paired pulse facilitation and depression (PPF, PPD) have long been used to monitor the presynaptic versus postsynaptic changes occurring during more lasting processes such as long-term potentiation and depression (LTP, LTD). 3. 13. Integrative modeling of intratumoral heterogeneity, plasticity and regulation in nervous system cancers

    Author : Ida Larsson; Sven Nelander; Fredrik Swartling; Patrik Johansson; Itay Tirosh; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nervous system cancer; Glioblastoma; Heterogeneity; Plasticity; Mathematical modeling; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : The adult brain tumor glioblastoma (GBM) is characterized by short survival and a lack of efficient treatments. Median survival is 15 months from time of diagnosis and the 5-year survival rate is only 7 %. READ MORE

  4. 14. Regimented language training : Changes to brain and behaviour following intensive non-native language learning

    Author : Johan Mårtensson; Institutionen för psykologi; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Cortical thickness; Hippocampus; Plasticity; Language acquisition; Associative memory; Transfer; Education;

    Abstract : The influence of foreign-language acquisition on adult brain structure remains mostly unexplored. Whilst several cross-sectional studies have led to further understanding of how language can affect brain structure, only a few longitudinal studies have been conducted. READ MORE

  5. 15. Effects of PGC1a-induced exercise adaptations in muscle on plasticity and recovery mechanisms in the CNS

    Author : Lars O Karlsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; muscle; brain; exercise; transgenic; PGC-1α; FNDC5; irisin;

    Abstract : In this thesis, we sought to determine if muscle-derived exercise-induced signaling via PGC-1α muscle activation influences neuroplasticity under physiological or pathophysiological conditions. For this purpose, transgenic mice with muscle-specific overexpression of PGC-1α that display an endurance exercise muscle phenotype were evaluated in models of cranial irradiation and photothrombotic stroke, as well as in aging and in a voluntary running paradigm.
