  1. 21. Post-Ischemic Housing Conditions Influence On Gene Transcription And Translation After Permanent Focal Brain Ischemia In Rats

    Author : Li-Ru Zhao; Sektion IV; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; rats; brain-derived neurotrophic factor; mRNA; nerve growth factor-induced gene A; corticosteroid receptors; in situ hybridization; Neurologi; neurophysiology; Neurology; neuropsychology; brain ischemia; enriched environment; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Enriched environment (EE) housing significantly ameliorates neurological deficits induced by cortical brain ischemia without changing infarction size, suggesting that EE-related functional benefits are associated with neuronal plasticity events in the remaining tissue. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor-induced gene A (NGFI-A) and corticosteroid receptors (mineralocorticoid receptor, MR; glucocorticoid receptor, GR) have been demonstrated to be involved in brain plasticity. 2. 22. fMRI for mapping the plastic somatotopy of primary somatosensory cortex - Development and clinical applications

    Author : Andreas Weibull; Malmö Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; smoothing; physiological noise; spatial resolution; primary somatosensory cortex; cortical reorganisation; brain plasticity; fMRI; partial volume effects;

    Abstract : Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a widely used tool for studying brain function in vivo. The technique is based on acquiring brain images sensitive to the physiological response following neural activation, and hence, allows brain activity to be examined and documented. READ MORE

  3. 23. Neurotrophic factors and neuronal plasticity

    Author : Sten Linnarsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The neurotrophic factors were originally discovered because of their ability to rescue neurons during a period of naturally occurring programmed cell death. This gave rise to the neurotrophic factor hypothesis which states that specific target-derived factors protect and support subpopulations of innervating neurons, thereby regulating the pattern and quantity of innervation properly for each target tissue. 4. 24. Body perception and brain plasticity in blind and sighted individuals

    Author : Dominika Radziun; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Lack of vision is associated with large-scale brain plasticity. Vision, touch, proprioception, interoception, and other sensory modalities are thought to play a vital role in developing and maintaining bodily awareness. READ MORE

  5. 25. Astrocyte-mediated short-term synaptic depression

    Author : My Andersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : glutamate; glia; plasticity; synapse; hippocampus;

    Abstract : Short-term synaptic plasticity, the activity-dependent regulation of synaptic efficacy that occurs in the timeframe of milliseconds to seconds, is a fundamental property of the synapse, mostly attributed to changes in release probability. These changes are commonly ascribed to intrinsic mechanisms in the presynaptic terminal and to different transmitters acting on the presynaptic terminal. READ MORE
