  1. 1. Aerobic fitness and healthy brain aging : cognition, brain structure, and dopamine

    Author : Lars Jonasson; Carl-Johan Boraxbekk; Katrine Riklund; Emrah Düzel; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aerobic exercise; VO2; working memory; executive function; freesurfer; striatum; dopamine; D2-receptors; [11C]raclopride;

    Abstract : Background: Performing aerobic exercise and maintaining high levels of aerobic fitness may have positive effects on both brain structure and function in older adults. Despite decades of research however, there is still a rather poor understanding of the neurocognitive mechanisms explaining the positive effects of aerobic exercise on cognition. READ MORE

  2. 2. Telomeres and the brain : an investigation into the relationships of leukocyte telomere length with functional and structural attributes of the brain

    Author : Mikael Wikgren; Karl-Fredrik Norrback; Rolf Adolfsson; Göran Roos; Thomas Karlsson; Brenda Penninx; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; APOE; aging; atrophy; brain; cognition; cortisol; depression; hippocampus; HPA axis; MRI; stress; telomere length; white matter hyper-intensities.;

    Abstract : Telomeres are the outermost parts of linear chromosomes. They consist of tandemly repeated non-coding short nucleotide sequences (TTAGGG in all vertebrates), in humans spanning over the last 2 to 15 kilobase pairs of the chromosome. Due to the end-replication problem, telomeres shorten with each cellular division. READ MORE

  3. 3. Analysis of Human Brain MRI : Contributions to Regional Volume Studies

    Author : Richard Nordenskjöld; Joel Kullberg; Elna-Marie Larsson; Lars Johansson; Håkan Ahlström; Göran Starck; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MRI; Brain; Volume; Hemisphere; Intracranial volume; Image analysis; Computerized Image Analysis; Datoriserad bildanalys;

    Abstract : Many disorders are associated with regional brain volumes. The analysis of these volumes from MR images often requires sequential processing steps such as localization and delineation. READ MORE

  4. 4. City Re-Making Approaches in Contemporary Urbanism : “Re-Urbanism” as a Strategy for the Revitalization of Detroit and Declining Cities

    Author : Ryan Locke; Tigran Haas; Michael Mehaffy; David Brain; KTH; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Re-Urbanism; urban decline; urban revitalization; Placemaking; Detroit; urbanism; public space; Landscape Urbanism; Planering och beslutsanalys; Planning and Decision Analysis;

    Abstract : Many cities today are experiencing extreme widespread urban decline, at a time when urban growth and revitalization are prioritized on the agenda. This dissertation examines a number of prominent urban revitalization strategies for declining cities, specifically highlighting the emblematic case of Detroit as a research subject. READ MORE

  5. 5. Regulation of site-selective A-to-I RNA editing : During mammalian brain development

    Author : Helene Wahlstedt; Marie Öhman; Mary O'connell; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; RNA editering; ADAR; brain development; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology; molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Adenosine (A) to inosine (I) RNA editing is a widespread post-transcriptional mechanism in mammals that contributes to increase the protein diversity. Adenosine deaminases that act on RNA (ADARs) are the enzymes catalyzing RNA editing. ADARs are particularly active within the brain where they act on transcripts involved in neurotransmission.
