1. Improving emergency braking performance of heavy vehicles
Abstract : Previous studies by the Cambridge Vehicle Dynamics Consortium (CVDC) have suggested that, by improving the control bandwidth of conventional Heavy Goods Vehicle(HGV) brake actuators and using a ‘slip control’ braking strategy, HGV stopping distances could be reduced by up to 30% over existing systems. The work covered in this thesis looks to: validate the CVDC’s previous braking performance predictions through Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) simulation, investigate how in-plane tyre dynamics may influence such a system’s performance, develop and build a next generation high-bandwidth braking system for vehicle implementation and carry out comparative back-to-back vehicle tests between the new system and commercially available HGV ABS. 2. On Heavy-Haul Wheel Damages using Vehicle Dynamics Simulation
Abstract : Maintenance cost is one of the important issues in railway heavy-haul operations. In most of the cases, these costs are majorly referring to reprofiling and changing the wheels of the locomotives and the wagons. The main reason of the wheel damages is usually severe wear and/or surface initiated rolling contact fatigue (RCF). READ MORE

3. On Traffic Situation Predictions for Automated Driving of Long Vehicle Combinations
Abstract : The introduction of longer vehicle combinations for road transports than are currently allowed is an important viable option for achieving the environmental goals on transported goods in Sweden and Europe by the year 2030. This thesis addresses how driver assistance functionality for high-speed manoeuvring can be designed and realized for prospective long vehicle combinations. READ MORE

5. An Investigation of the Iron-Ore Wheel Damages using Vehicle Dynamics Simulation
Abstract : Maintenance cost is one of the important issues in railway heavy haul operations. For the iron-ore company LKAB, these costs are mainly associated with the reprofiling and changing of the wheels of the locomotives and wagons. The main reason for the wheel damages is usually surface initiated rolling contact fatigue (RCF) on the wheels. READ MORE
