  1. 1. Cooperative Breeding in the Southern Anteater-Chat : Sexual Disparity, Survival and Dispersal

    Author : Jonathan Barnaby; Jan Ekman; Anssi Laurila; Rita Covas; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Southern anteater-chat; Myrmecocichla formicivora; cooperative breeding; social evolution; behavioural ecology; delayed dispersal; family living; Africa; Biologi med inriktning mot populationsbiologi; Biology with specialization in Population Biology;

    Abstract : Group-living sets the scene for complex social behaviours such as cooperative breeding, and exploring the factors that shape group-living is crucial in understanding these behaviours. This thesis explores the ecology of a population of the facultative cooperative breeding southern anteater-chat (Myrmecocichla formicivora), a group-living bird species endemic to southern Africa. 2. 2. Nesting and migration in the introduced Canada goose in Sweden

    Author : Göran Sjöberg; Catherine M. Lessells; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Species introductions; DNA fingerprinting; natal dispersal; breeding dispersal; bird migration; wintering areas; clutch size; laying date; body reserves; nest defence; waterfowl; Canada goose; Anatidae; Branta canadensis;

    Abstract : The aim of the thesis was to document patterns in breeding and migration in Swedish Canada geese Branta canadensis, to explain these against the genetic and historical background of the population, and to test predictions of hypotheses pertaining to parental investment.The Canada goose population in Sweden was founded by the introduction of a few individuals in the 1930's. 3. 3. Genetic Disequilibria and the Interpretation of Population Genetic Structure in Daphnia

    Author : Lars M. Berg; Xavier Vekemans; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; breeding system; linkage disequilibrium; dispersal; genetic structure; Daphnia pulex; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; naturvårdsbiologi; Conservation Biology;

    Abstract : Understanding the processes that shape the spatial distribution of genetic variation within species is central to the evolutionary study of diversification and demography. Neutral genetic variation reflects past demographic events as well as current demographic characteristics of populations, and the correct interpretation of genetic data requires that the relative impact of these forces can be identified. 4. 4. Life history decisions in a changing environment : A long-term study of a temperate barnacle goose population

    Author : Henk van der Jeugd; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Age at first reproduction; Barnacle goose; Branta leucopsis; Coloniality; Dispersal; Life-history; Mate choice; Population dynamics; Survival; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis shows that climate and increasing population density have profound effects on survival, age at first reproduction, and natal dispersal in a rapidly increasing temperate barnacle goose Branta leucopsis population on Gotland, Sweden.Colony size was found to be the most important fitness-determinant because of strong density-dependent effects on reproduction. 5. 5. Ground beetle dynamics in intensively managed agricultural landscapes

    Author : Erkki Palmu; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Carabidae; species richness; species diversity; functional traits; body size; emergence; dispersal; stable isotopes; deuterium; oxygen; crop diversification; landscape heterogeneity; agricultural management;

    Abstract : In this thesis I have focused on studying dynamics of ground beetle assemblages in intensively managed agricultural landscapes. By definition, the land cover of these landscapes is dominated by annually tilled farmland, comprising a range of different crop types, in the context of the southern Swedish province of Scania mostly winter wheat, spring barley, winter rapeseed, and sugar beets.
