  1. 1. Bracing of steel bridges during construction; theory, full-scale tests and simulations

    Author : Hassan Mehri; Avdelningen för Konstruktionsteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Bracing; steel-concrete composite; steel; bridge; test; construction; laboratory; experiment; experimental; theory;

    Abstract : A number of steel bridges have suffered lateral-torsional failure during their construction due to their lacking adequate lateral and/or rotational stiffness. In most cases, slight bracing can be of great benefit to the main girders involved through their controlling out-of-plane deformations and enabling the resistance that is needed to be achieved. 2. 2. Structural Control and Identification of Civil Engineering Structures

    Author : Tarek Edrees; Francesc Pozo; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Construction Engineering and Management; Byggproduktion; Structural Engineering; Konstruktionsteknik;

    Abstract : In general, the main purpose of a structural control system is to apply powerful control techniques that improve the behaviour of civil structures under various kinds of dynamic loading. The first part of this thesis presents novel applications of posicast and input shaping control schemes that have never previously been applied in the field of structural control. READ MORE

  3. 3. Development of connections for fibre reinforced bridge elements and an analysis of sustainability

    Author : Valbona Mara; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; bridge; insert; connection; deck; FRP; bolt; joint; fibre reinforced polymer; LCC; LCA;

    Abstract : The deterioration of existing bridge structures due to a number of causes has led researchersto pursue new construction materials with high performance, such as fibre reinforced polymer(FRP) composite materials. The inherent properties of FRP materials are their light weight,high strength and high resistance to aggressive environments. READ MORE

  4. 4. Holistic approach in engineering design - controlling risks from accidental hazards in bridge design

    Author : Ivar Björnsson; Avdelningen för Konstruktionsteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; design; codes; accidental; extreme; bridges; holistic; approach; robustness; risk; reliability; uncertainty;

    Abstract : Engineering design, in concise terms, is what engineers do using what they know. It is the underlying decision making activity that determines what is to be built and how it should be built. An ever present requirement in engineering design is that the structure should be safe. 5. 5. Flexible culverts in sloping terrain : Research advances and application

    Author : Amer Wadi; Raid Karoumi; Lars Pettersson; Jan Vaslestad; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Flexible culvert; Soil‒steel composite bridge; Sloping terrain; Swedish design method; Finite element model; Slope stability; Avalanche load; Snowshed; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering;

    Abstract : Although the construction of flexible culverts involves simplicity in comparison to similar concrete structures, the complexity of the beneficial interaction between soil and steel materials requires good understanding for their composite action and performance. Current design methods have certain validity limitations with regard to applicable slopes above the structures. READ MORE
