  1. 1. Ozonation in Advanced Wastewater Treatment : Practical Aspects and Development of a Prediction Tool for Pharmaceutical Removal

    Author : Rubén Juárez; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ozonation; wastewater; suspended solids; pharmaceuticals; bromate;

    Abstract : Pharmaceuticals that are not completely metabolized in the human body are excreted in wastewater and may find their way into surface waters, where they can have harmful effects on aquatic fauna and flora. The implementation of ozonation at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can reduce the amount of pharmaceuticals discharged to the environment. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies of DNA repair strategies in response to complex DNA damages

    Author : Ainars Bajinskis; Mats Harms-Ringdahl; Bo Stenerlöw; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ionizing radiation; complex DNA damage; indirect effect of radiation; dimethyl sulfoxide; molekylärgenetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : The main aim of this thesis was to study the role of the indirect actions of γ-rays and α-particles on the complexity of primary DNA damages and the repair fidelity of major DNA repair pathways: non-homologous end joining (NHEJ), homologous recombination repair (HRR) and base excision repair (BER). The complexity of radiation-induced damages increases and the proximity between damages decreases with increasing LET due to formation of ionization clusters along the particle track. READ MORE

  3. 3. Hydration of oxo anions : a combined computational and experimental structure and dynamics study in aqueous solutions

    Author : Lars Eklund; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The structure and dynamics of several hydrated oxo anions were studied using multiple methodologies. Aqueous solutions of sulfate, sulfite, thiosulfate, peroxysulfate, selenite, selenate, hypochlorite, chlorite, chlorate, perchlorate, bromate, iodate and periodate salts were studied using large angle X-ray scattering (LAXS) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. 4. 4. Composite Cryogels: Stationary Phase for Separation of Complex Media

    Author : Solmaz Hajizadeh; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Composite cryogel; Complex media; Purification; Chromatography; Environmental application; Molecularly imprinted polymer;

    Abstract : Demands for efficient, economical and fast separation and purification methods for various target molecules have led to the development of new techniques and materials for bioseparation processes. Separation can be carried out in both batch and chromatographic modes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Altered gene expression in the human airways during oxidative stress

    Author : Tiziana Dandrea; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Nitrogen dioxide; Ozone; Oxidative stress; Gene expression; Redox signalling; GSH; Alveolar macrophages.;

    Abstract : The atmospheric accumulation of pollutant gases, such as N02 and ozone, has been associated with an increased airways hyper-reactivity within the healthy population. Moreover, those with conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases generally experience an exacerbation of their symptoms upon exposure to these noxious gases. READ MORE
