  1. 1. Pyrolysis and Detoxification of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) for Feedstock Recycling

    Author : Panagiotis Evangelopoulos; Weihong Yang; Efthymios Kantarelis; Tobias Richards; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Pyrolysis; WEEE; solvent extraction; brominated flame retardants; Tetrabromobisphenol A; Auger reactor; Πυρόλυση; ΑΗΗΕ; εκχύλιση με διαλύτη; βρωμιωμένα επιβραδυντικά φλόγας; Τετραβρωμοδιφαινόλη Α; Pyrolys; WEEE; lösningsmedelsextraktion; bromerade flamskyddsmedel; tetrabrombisfenol A; Teknisk materialvetenskap; Materials Science and Engineering;

    Abstract : The trends in waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) generation shows that their volume constantly increases, while the current waste management technologies have proven to be insufficient in order to meet the strict criteria and the new legislations of the European Union. Pyrolysis and thermal treatment in general could be a valuable solution for closing the loop of materials and could contribute to the energy demands of modern society. READ MORE

  2. 2. Child labour and health hazards: chemical exposure and occupational injuries in Nicaraguan children working in a waste disposal site

    Author : Steven Cuadra; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; child labor; waste disposal sites; health hazards; heavy metals; persistent organochlorine pollutants; brominated flame retardants; occupational injuries; Nicaragua; barnarbete; avfallshanteringsplatser; hälsorisker; tungmetaller; beständiga klororganiska föroreningar; bromerade flamskyddsmedel; yrkesskador; Nicaragua;

    Abstract : About 600 children and teenagers work at Managua's landfill, the largest in Nicaragua. They collect and sort waste at the open dump, which covers an area of 7 km2 on the outskirts of the city on the shores of Lake Managua. READ MORE

  3. 3. On the combustion and photolytic degradation products of some brominated flame retardants

    Author : Gunilla Söderström; Stellan Marklund; Mats Tysklind; Kees Olie; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : Many modern products, especially electronic goods, are protected by brominated flame retardants (BFR). Some of the most common flame retardants are polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDE), tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBP-A) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD). READ MORE

  4. 4. Polybrominated diphenylethers in the environment - Local and long range transport

    Author : Arnout ter Schure; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Substance Flow Analysis; Spatial Variation; Sources; PCB; PBDE; Latitude; Global Fractionation; Frogs; Deposition; Atmosphere; Baltic Sea; Ekologi; Temperature; Washout ratio; Ecology;

    Abstract : I have studied the sources, long range transport, and rates of flow of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), from the technosphere to the Baltic ecosystems. PBDEs are mainly used in polymers, which are applied in electrical equipment to prevent overheating or flashover and are produced in large quantities. READ MORE

  5. 5. Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans : from source of emission to human exposure

    Author : Filip Bjurlid; Jessika Hagberg; Bert van Bavel; Ingrid Ericson Jogsten; Peter Haglund; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PBDD Fs; PCDD Fs; marine mammal; combustion; fire; human milk; occupational exposure;

    Abstract : Brominated flame retardants (BFRs), which are ubiquitous in modern life and the environment, are the major source for polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PBDD/Fs). The knowledge about PBDD/Fs is lim-ited compared to other environmental pollutants, even though PBDD/Fs show similar toxicity as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) which are considered to be among the most toxic man-made substances.
