  1. 1. Marine Seaweed Invasions : the Ecology of Introduced Fucus evanescens

    Author : Sofia A. Wikström; Lena Kautsky; Ove Eriksson; Paul Lavery; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biological invasions; marine; seaweed; algae; herbivory; enemy release hypothesis; phlorotannins; anti-fouling; Fucus evanescens; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Biological invasions are an important issue of global change and an increased understanding of invasion processes is of crucial importance for both conservation managers and international trade. In this thesis, I have studied the invasion of the brown seaweed Fucus evanescens, to investigate the fate and effect of a perennial, habitat-forming seaweed introduced to a coastal ecosystem. 2. 2. Marine seaweed invasions : Impacts and biotic resistance in native ecosystems

    Author : Josefin Sagerman; Sofia Wikström; Fransisco Arenas; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant invasion; exotic species; generalist herbivores; plant-herbivore interactions; enemy-release hypothesis; ecosystem function; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Marine seaweeds constitute one of the most productive plant systems known on Earth and a rich fauna including juvenile fish and crustaceans is dependent on the habitats they form. Human influence on marine costal ecosystems has resulted in large scale changes to the abundance and distribution of species, where species introductions constitute an obvious part. READ MORE

  3. 3. Polymer extraction and utilization of brown algal biomass

    Author : Martin Sterner; Ulrica Edlund; Fredrik Gröndahl; Marguerite Rinaudo; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Algae; Saccharina latissima; alginate; brown seaweed; extraction; filament; chelation; gel; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : Aquaculture is a field with a world changing potential. The areas at sea are enormous and aquatic cultivations impact both the environment and local ecology far less than land based cultivations. In the realm of algae, abundancies exists of nutrition, water and accessible sunlight, but there is constant shortage of places to dwell. READ MORE

  4. 4. Innovative processing of brown seaweed for value-added products

    Author : Leila Allahgholi; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The increasing depletion of fossil fuels, rising greenhouse gas emissions, and a growing global population have increased the need for sustainable food and energy sources. Traditional industrial biotechnology, which relies on plant-based feedstocks, competes with food production for arable land. READ MORE

  5. 5. On the endemic Fucus radicans in the Baltic Sea

    Author : Ellen Schagerström; Lena Kautsky; Inga Kjersti Sjøtun; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; seaweed; sexual reproduction; clonality; fragmentation; dimorphism; salinity; distribution; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : The brown macroalgae Fucus radicans is endemic to the Baltic Sea, but little is known about this newly described species. This thesis investigates the ecology and role of F. radicans within the species poor Baltic Sea ecosystem. The thallus of F. READ MORE
