  1. 6. Plant responses after drainage and restoration in rich fens

    Author : Kalle Mälson; Håkan Rydin; Sebastian Sundberg; Harri Vasander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; brown mosses; bryophytes; colonization; competition; dispersal limitation; liming; mire; peatland; rewetting; wetland restoration; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Rich fens are an important, but threatened, habitat type in the boreal landscape. In this thesis I have examined responses of rich fen vascular plants and bryophytes after drainage and restoration.The effects of drainage on the rich fen flora were observed in a long time study and the responses were rapid and drastic. 2. 7. Plant Species Composition and Diversity in Cliff and Mountain Ecosystems

    Author : Henrik Antonsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cliff ecology; bryophytes; biodiversity; beta diversity; dispersal; facilitation; nurse plant; plant-plant interactions; Silene acaulis; stress;

    Abstract : Ecosystems today are under increasing pressure from a rapidly changing climate, changes in land-use, habitat fragmentation and degradation and increasing anthropogenic disturbance. Studying drivers of biodiversity patterns is of increasing importance for understanding the dynamics of communities and their reactions and adaptation to changes in the future. READ MORE

Physiology of nonvascular plants; Systematisk botanik; growth rate; regeneration; evolution; Systematic botany; taxonomy; introgression; maternal inheritance; recombination; hybridizarion;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to reveal details of the interspecific hybridization among bryophytes as exemplified by Sphagnum capillifolium and S. quinquefarium. READ MORE

  4. 9. Resistance and recolonization of bryophyte assemblages following disturbances : - detecting patterns and exploring mechanisms

    Author : Martin Schmalholz; Kristoffer Hylander; Jari Kouki; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bryophytes; boreal forest; boulders; clear-cutting; disturbance; establishment; insect outbreaks; microtopography; recolonization; resistance; spatial heterogeneity; succession; wildfires; Biology; Biologi; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : Disturbances are ubiquitous features of most northern forest ecosystems. The subsequent response of plant assemblages on both short (resistance or not) and long term (recolonization or not) will depend on a number of factors operating at several spatial scales. READ MORE

  5. 10. Effects of enhanced ultraviolet-B radiation on subarctic ecosystems

    Author : Carola Gehrke; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pigmentation; photosynthesis; dark respiration; shoot morphology; shoot growth; phanerogams ; species composition cryptogams; productivity; decomposition; dwarf shrubs; bryophytes; peatland ecosystem; heath ecosystem; UV-B; ozone depletion; Plant ecology; Växtekologi;

    Abstract : Biologically harmful ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280-320 nm) is increasing at the Earth´s surface owing to stratospheric ozone depletion. This is of global concern due to potential impacts of enhanced UV-B radiation on the biosphere. READ MORE
