  1. 1. Managing high environmental performance? : Applying life cycle approaches and environmental certification tools in the building and real estate sectors

    Author : Nils W. O. Brown; Tove Malmqvist; Peter Guthrie; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Buildings; operational energy use; life cycle assessment; environmental certification; environmental assessment; renovation; strategy; design process; value creation; embodied environmental impacts; Planering och beslutsanalys; Planning and Decision Analysis;

    Abstract : The main aim of this thesis is  to demonstrate and critically assess life cycle approaches’ and environmental certification (EC) tools’ potential for supporting decisions for improved environmental performance in the building and real estate sectors.Using life cycle approaches, the thesis shows that for new build and renovation cases aiming for low operational energy use that embodied global warming potential (GWP) due to material production can constitute a large portion of a building’s lifetime GWP. 2. 2. A Life Cycle Approach to Environmental Sustainability in Aggregate Production Systems

    Author : Christina Lee; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Aggregates; Gravel; Sand; LCA; Production Systems; Sustainability; Life Cycle Assessment; Environmental Management; EPDs; Quarries; Tool Development; Environmental Impact; Environmental Product Declarations; Construction Products;

    Abstract : Rock materials, such as sand, gravel, and crushed rock, serve as the foundation of our society. Known collectively as aggregates, these materials are essential for building foundations, concrete, and roads, making them the second most extracted material globally after water. READ MORE

  3. 3. Life Cycle Assessment of Building Products. Case Studies and Methodology

    Author : Åsa Jönsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; VOCs; environmental assessment; floorings; methods; LCA; concrete; indoor climate; Life Cycle Assessment; structural frames; building materials; steel; tools;

    Abstract : The main objectives of this thesis were to demonstrate how Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) may be applied to building products, to describe what methodological LCA issues are specific to building products, to work out solutions to some of these issues and to relate LCA to other environmental assessment methods that may be applied to building products. First, in a literature study, the state of the art in the field of environmental assessment of building products is described, and the five articles constituting the thesis are put into context. 4. 4. On sustainability assessment of technical systems : experience from systems analysis with the ORWARE and ecoeffect tools

    Author : Getachew Assefa; Björn Frostell; Thomas Nybrant; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; technology assessment; interdisciplinarity; sustainability; sustainability assessment; industrial ecology; substance flow analysis; material flow analysis; life cycle assessment; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Abstract : Engineering research and development work is undergoing a reorientation from focusing on specific parts of different systems to a broader perspective of systems level, albeit at a slower pace. This reorientation should be further developed and enhanced with the aim of organizing and structuring our technical systems in meeting sustainability requirements in face of global ecological threats that have far-reaching social and economic implications, which can no longer be captured using conventional approach of research.
