  2. 2. Influence of thermal mass on the heating and cooling demands of a building unit

    Author : Fredrik Ståhl; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; thermal mass; environmental impact; thermal comfort; heat storage; life cycle; building energy use; earth tube heat exchanger; comfort interval; heavy or light buildings; building structure;

    Abstract : The purpose of this work is to find to what extent the thermal properties of the building materials, the allowed indoor temperature swing, determined by the comfort interval, and, to some extent, the ventilation strategy can affect the heating and cooling demand of a building. It is well known that a thermally heavy building, that is a building with a high heat capacity, often demands less energy for heating and cooling and have a more stabile indoor temperature due to heat storage in the building structure. 3. 3. Protein Structure Prediction : Model Building and Quality Assessment

    Author : Björn Wallner; Arne Elofsson; Michael Levitt; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; protein structure prediction; proteinstrukturförutsägelse; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik;

    Abstract : Proteins play a crucial roll in all biological processes. The wide range of protein functions is made possible through the many different conformations that the protein chain can adopt. The structure of a protein is extremely important for its function, but to determine the structure of protein experimentally is both difficult and time consuming. READ MORE

  4. 4. The Structure of Chinese Timber Architecture Twelfth century design standards and construction principles

    Author : Qinghua Guo; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; units of measurement; design standards; timber structure; Chinese architecture; building patterns; carpentry system; construction principles; proportion; modular design;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the building standards and construction principles prescribed and used in the construction of state buildings of the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279), China, from the viewpoint of architectural design. It aims to answer three fundamental questions: (1) What measuring system was used in the carpentry design and construction? (2) What building scales and proportions were prescribed for and used in state buildings of the time? (3) What were the interrelations of the structural patterns and roof types, and what were their relationships to the building scales and proportions? The thesis begins by providing detailed explanations of the highly refined and unique Song period modular system which governed not only the sizes of each individual elements, but also the dimensions of structural grids and the proportion of entire building. 5. 5. Towards Environmental Informatics for Building Stocks. A Conceptual Model for an Environmental Building Stock Information System for Sustainable Development - EBSIS

    Author : Liane Thuvander; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; building stock; information system; environmental system analysis; energy flows; building stock information system; material flows; environmental informatics; urban system analysis; environment; sustainable sevelopment;

    Abstract : The Swedish building sector uses a considerable amount of all materials and all energy used in Sweden. Knowledge about the existing building stock, its impact on the environment related to the use of material and energy, however, is limited and target settings for environmental objectives and decision making are based on vague information.
