11. Immunological consequences of Epstein-Barr virus replication
Abstract : Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous human herpesvirus involved in the pathogenesis of a wide spectrum of malignant and non-malignant diseases. In healthy EBV carriers, the virus is believed to infect two major cellular targets - B lymphocytes and epithelial cells. READ MORE

12. Regulation of DNA damage responses by the Myc oncogene : implications for future anti-cancer therapies
Abstract : Myc is a transcription factor frequently found deregulated in human cancer. Cells with deregulated expression of Myc carry a selective advantage against its neighbours due to the fact that Myc-mediated transcription governs crucial cellular events such as proliferation and growth. 13. Assessment of therapeutic targets in experimental models of Myc-induced lymphoma
Abstract : The Myc transcription factor activates expression of genes that promote cellular functions such as proliferation and cell growth. The deregulated Myc expression, characteristic for the tumor cell, also activates apoptosis, which selects for additional genetic changes deactivating the induced cell death. READ MORE

14. The role of EBNA binding proteins in cell transformation
Abstract : Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infects majority of the human population and maintains sub-clinical infection. However, under certain conditions it is associated with several B-cell malignancies, such as Burkitt lymphoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma etc. READ MORE

15. Genetic and epigenetic characterization of pediatric high hyperdiploid acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to analyze the genetic and epigenetic characteristics of pediatric high hyperdiploid acute lymphoblastic leukemia (HeH ALL), the most common type of childhood malignancy. The three original articles presented in this thesis have addressed three major questions regarding HeH ALL: what are the genetic characteristics of the most common structural abnormality – dup(1q)? Are aberrant methylation patterns involved in leukemogenesis? How do diagnostic and relapse samples relate to each other genetically? In article I we found that the proximal breakpoints of dup(1q)-positive Burkitt lymphomas (BL) and pediatric HeH ALLs cluster close to the centromere, suggesting this region to be breakprone, and that five genes on 1q were significantly overexpressed and thus potentially pathogenetically important.
