1. Monitoring the cellular phosphate status in bloom-forming cyanobacteria of the Baltic Sea
Abstract : In the Baltic Sea dense cyanobacterial blooms occur regularly during late summer. Since the dominant bloom-forming cyanobacteria, Nodularia spp. and Apanizomenon spp. are capable of fixing atmospheric dinitrogen, the macronutrient predominantly limiting their growth is phosphorus. 2. Inhibitors of corneal inflammation and angiogenesis : Prospectives and challenges
Abstract : Pathologic angiogenesis is involved in cancer and several blinding conditions such as wet age-related macular degeneration, proliferative retinopathies and corneal neovascularization. In these dieseases, the angiogenic triggers are hypoxia and inflammation, and both involve the main angiogenic mediator, which is Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF). 3. Radiolabeled acetate PET in oncology imaging : studies on head and neck cancer, prostate cancer and normal distribution
Abstract : The use of positron emission tomography (PET) for imaging in oncology has grown rapidly in recent years. 2-[18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is the most common tracer of PET, although drawbacks exist. READ MORE

4. PLASMA PROTEINS IN NORMAL AND PREECLAMPTIC PREGNANCY
Abstract : The aim of the research presented in this thesis was to provide extended background knowledge concerning several biochemical markers, used for the medical evaluation of pregnant women with suspected or confirmed preeclampsia, in order to improve the reliability of monitoring. Plasma levels of beta-2 microglobulin, cystatin C and beta trace protein are known to reflect renal filtration in non-pregnant settings, and the plasma proteins, C-reactive protein and serum amyloid A protein, are known to be sensitive markers of inflammation. 5. Molecular characterization of the hepatitis C virus core protein
Abstract : Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is an RNA virus that causes chronic infection, which can lead to hepatocellular carcinomas in humans. Besides liver diseases, the chronic HCV infection causes a broad spectrum of extrahepatic complications such as lymphoproliferative, metabolic and autoimmune disorders. READ MORE
