  1. 1. Short- and long-term neuronal plasticity in hippocampal CA1 region of rat

    Author : Fen-Sheng Huang; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; glutamate; hippocampus; plasticity; synapse; LTP; LTD; AMPA; NMDA;

    Abstract : The brain is highly plastic, displaying both short- and long-term changes, resulting from developmental processes as well as learning and memory. Moreover, short-term plasticity such as paired pulse facilitation and depression (PPF, PPD) have long been used to monitor the presynaptic versus postsynaptic changes occurring during more lasting processes such as long-term potentiation and depression (LTP, LTD). 2. 2. Mechanisms of Ischemic Brain Injury- studies in murine hippocampal slice cultures

    Author : Anna Rytter; Sektion IV; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neuropsychology; Neurology; adenosine; caspases; hypothermia; in vitro; hippocampus; ischemia; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Cerebral ischemia is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the western world. Even though much effort has been put into research and development of effective drugs against ischemic damage there is to date no effective pharmacological brain protective treatment. READ MORE

  3. 3. Roles of SNAP-25 isoforms in activity-dependent long-term synaptic plasticity

    Author : Muhammad Irfan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : SNARE proteins, SNAP-25, syntaxin 1A and VAMP2 constitute the functional units which join together to form the core SNARE complex. The SNARE complex carries out the vital function of membrane fusion of intracellular vesicles with plasma membranes, leading to the release of neurotransmitters in brain neuronal circuits and of hormones in endocrine glands. 4. 4. Microfluidics based techniques for electrophysiological studies of cells

    Author : Aikeremu Ahemaiti; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis work investigates the application of microfluidics to perform electrophysiological studies on cells, including investigations of the effect of cholesterol on the dynamic ion permeability of TRPV1 ion channels, and the application of a microfluidic device, the multifunctional pipette, in electrophysiological studies on brain slices. In the first part of this thesis, Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells overexpressing the TRPV1 ion channel were used in a dynamic ion permeability study, where the activation properties of the TRPV1 ion channel were investigated using the patch clamp technique after depletion of membrane cholesterol. 5. 5. Ischemic Cell Death in the CNS - applications of a new in vitro model

    Author : Tobias Cronberg; Sektion IV; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsykologi; Neurologi; Neurology; astrocyte; stroke; adenosine; hyperglycaemia; glucose; free radicals; calcium; in vitro; brain ischemia; slice; neuropsychology; neurofysiologi; neurophysiology;

    Abstract : Ischemic brain damage is a common cause of death and disability. A global ischemic insult is usually the result of a transient cardiac arrest while occlusion of cerebral blood vessels leads to focal ischemic lesions, commonly termed stroke. READ MORE
