  1. 1. Systemic inflammatory activation during cardiac Surgery. Influence of cardiopulmonary bypass management and patient factors

    Author : Martin Westerberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : cardiopulmonary bypass; inflammatory response; coagulation; CABG; cardiotomy suction; cytokines;

    Abstract : Cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass is accompanied by a prominent systemic inflammatory and hemostatic activation, which may contribute to postoperative complications. Aims: To investigate if selection of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) system and management of cardiotomy suction (CTS) and mediastinal shed blood (MSB) affect systemic inflammatory response. READ MORE

  2. 2. Clinically-driven angiography after coronary artery bypass surgery : Results from the SWEDEHEART registry

    Author : Mikael Janiec; Rickard Lindblom; Stefan Thelin; Alexander Wahba; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CABG; Coronary artery bypass surgery; angiography; graft failure; Thorax Surgery; Thoraxkirurgi;

    Abstract : The success of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) arguably depends on the patency rate of the conduits. The saphenous vein grafts (SVGs) most often used are subject to graft disease and their reduced long-term patency compared to left internal mammary artery (IMA) grafts is well established. READ MORE

  3. 3. Aspects of retransfusion of shed blood in cardiac surgery

    Author : Björn Brondén; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CABG; cardiotomy suction; lipid microemboli; porcine study; clinical study; cystatin C; creatinine; iohexol clearance; outcome; retransfusion; transfusion; blood.;

    Abstract : The use of cardiotomy suction during open heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has a long tradition and often regarded as mandatory. Recently, studies have described potentially negative effects of cardiotomy suction with activation of the complement system, enhanced inflammatory response, hemolysis and coagulopathy. READ MORE

  4. 4. Cardiovascular regulation and vascular structure in prehypertension and coronary heart disease

    Author : Anna Myredal; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : prehypertension; coronary heart disease; repolarization; baroreflex; intima thickness; CABG; non-dippers;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to characterize vascular structure and different aspects of cardiovascular regulation in otherwise healthy subjects with slightly elevated blood pressure and compare to healthy subjects with normotension and also investigate patients with established primary or secondary hypertension and coronary heart disease. Altered cardiac repolarization and arterial baroreflex function has been associated with adverse prognosis and increased risk for ventricular arrhythmias in patients with cardiovascular diseases. 5. 5. Nutrition in Elderly Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery

    Author : Doris Rapp-Kesek; Torbjörn Karlsson; Folke Hammarqvist; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Anaesthesiology and intensive care; elderly; nutrition; CABG; cardiac surgery; outcome; insulin resistance; enteral nutrition; splanchnic blood flow; BMI; albumin; 3-methylhistidine; alfa-1-antitrypsin; Anestesiologi och intensivvård;

    Abstract : Many elderly undergo cardiac surgery. The prevalence of malnutrition in elderly is high and increases with comorbidity. This thesis aims to clarify some aspects on performing surgery in elderly concerning nutritional status, nutritional treatment and age-related physiology. READ MORE
