  1. 16. Calcium-binding proteins as markers and functional determinants of neurons in pain networks

    Author : Mingdong Zhang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The thesis focuses on the anatomical and cellular distribution of three EF-hand calcium binding proteins, secretagogin, neuronal calcium-binding protein 1 (NECAB1) and NECAB2 in dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) and spinal cord of three species, mouse, rat and human, and their possible roles in pathophysiological pain. In Paper I and Paper IV, we report that the expression of secretagogin is limited to a small subpopulation of peptidergic neurons in mouse and human DRGs expressing calcitonin generelated peptide (CGRP). 2. 17. The principal inferior olivary nucleus in aging and Alzheimer’s disease

    Author : Helen Lasn; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Neuronal degeneration is a commanding event in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Neuronal loss is one of the major hallmarks and is frequently reported in regions with presence of neuritic plaques (NPs) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). READ MORE

  3. 18. Development and preclinical assessment of novel therapies for Epilepsy. Exploring the potential of human-derived cell lines and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor for network inhibition

    Author : Eliska Waloschkova; Epilepsicentrum; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Epilepsy; epileptogenesis; inhibition; cell therapy; GABAergic interneurons; mesenchymal stem cells; GDNF;

    Abstract : Epilepsy is one of the leading neurological disorders affecting not only patients who suffer from seizures but also people around them and society in general. The striking one third of patients not responding to pharmacological treatments implies the necessity of developing alternative options for controlling seizures in these individuals. READ MORE

  4. 19. Metabolic and pharmacokinetic study to enhance busulphan therapeutic efficacy

    Author : Fadwa Benkessou; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Busulphan (Bu) is an alkylating agent used in high-doses as part of the conditioning regimen prior to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). HSCT is a curative treatment for hematological malignancies and other disorders. Bu can be administered by oral or intravenous route. READ MORE

  5. 20. Dopamine neurons in ventral mesencephalon : interactions with glia and locus coeruleus

    Author : Elisabet Berglöf; Ingrid Strömberg; Stephen B. Dunnett; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Parkinson’s disease; ventral mesencephalon; nerve fiber formation; glia; locus coeruleus; grafting; antioxidant-enriched diet; Histology; Histologi;

    Abstract : Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by a depletion of the dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. The cause of the disease is yet unknown but age, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation are some of the features involved in the degeneration. READ MORE
