  1. 6. Exploring the interactome of EF-hand proteins

    Author : Mikael Bauer; Biofysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; EF-hand; calcium; STIM; stromal interaction molecule; secretagogin; Calmodulin; calbindin D28k; protein-protein interactions; zinc; protein array;

    Abstract : EF-hand proteins are central in many cellular processes being the main group of Ca2+-sensing and buffering proteins in the cell. In the work presented in this thesis we study ligand interactions of three EF-hand proteins; calmodulin, calbindin D28k and secretagogin. READ MORE

  2. 7. Perplexing Protein Puzzles

    Author : Stina Lindman; Biofysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; calbindin D9k; split-GFP; protein G B1; pKa-values; protein reconstitution; Electrostatic interactions; protein stability; protein denaturation; heteronuclear NMR; pH titrations;

    Abstract : Protein structure and stability are inherent in the amino acid sequence and governed by non-covalent interactions. The cooperation between forces is, however, perplexing and not well understood. In order to elucidate and predict protein folding and stability, detailed studies of non-covalent interactions are required. READ MORE

  3. 8. Calcium binding protein immunoreactivity in the central auditory system and correlations with the auditory periphery : the effects of noise and aging in mice

    Author : Esma Idrizbegovic; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Auditory; hearing loss; central auditory system; stereology; plasticity;

    Abstract : This study has examined how calcium binding protein immunoreactivity is modulated in the cochlear nucleus and the inferior colliculus after noise exposure and during aging in mice. The effect of noise exposure on calbindin-D28k (calbindin) and parvalbumin immunoreactivity in the dorsal and posteroventral cochlear nucleus (DCN and PVCN) and inferior colliculus (IC) was studied in CBA/CBA mice by using two-dimensional quantification. 4. 9. Anatomical studies of the dopamine system in the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland

    Author : Arash Hellysaz; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The hypothalamus is a small, evolutionarily conserved brain region, necessary for our survival as individuals and as a species. It collects various sensory inputs, process them to maintain homeostasis and to overcome stressors, and generates outputs that affect the autonomic nervous system, the endocrine system and somatomotor behaviors. 5. 10. Statistical Mechanical Studies of Titrating Polyelectrolytes

    Author : Magnus Ullner; Kemiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; integral equation theory; variational calculations; Monte Carlo simulations; end-to-end separation; apparent dissociation constant; titrating polyelectrolytes; electrostatic interactions; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Different models and statistical mechanical approximations for titrating polyelectrolytes are studied and the results compared with Monte Carlo simulations and experimental data. Three types of models have been used in the simulations: i) rigid structures and freely jointed chains with ii) rigid bonds and iii) flexible, harmonic bonds. READ MORE
