  1. 1. Aspects of pathological apoptosis in the immature brain after hypoxia-ischemia

    Author : Ulrika Hallin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : neonatal; rat; brain; hypoxia-ischemia; necrosis; apoptosis; calpain; caspase; Bcl-2; Bax; mitochondria; calcineurin.;

    Abstract : The cause of mechanisms underlying perinatal brain injury is not fully known, but it results in a wide variety of neurological impairments in the affected children. When injured, neurons of the newborn brain are prone to undergo programmed cell death, apoptosis, since this genetic program is normally activated in some cells during development of the nervous system, even in the perinatal period. 2. 2. RUNX1/AML1 functions and mechanisms regulating granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor transcription

    Author : Hebin Liu; Sven Påhlman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : RUNX1 AML1; Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor GM-CSF ; Calcineurin; CaMKII; Ets1; Transforming growth factor-b TGF-b ; Smad3; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is a multipotent cytokine involved in the production and function of hematopoietic cells, and GM-CSF plays in particular a major role in responses to infection and physiological and pathological inflammatory processes. GM-CSF is produced in many cell types, and increases in the intracellular Ca2+ concentration are, like in many other systems, of major importance in the intracellular signaling that determines GM-CSF expression after receptor stimulation of the cells. 3. 3. Metal homeostasis as critical determinant for cellular fitness

    Author : Jutta Diessl; Sabrina Büttner; Rajini Rao; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; metal homeostasis; manganese toxicity; coenzyme Q synthesis; mitochondrial respiration; calcineurin signaling; Pmr1; SPCA1; calcium; survival; caloric restriction; Parkinson’s disease models; proteotoxicity; Pep4; cathepsin D; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Metals play a crucial role in cellular biology. Bulk and trace metals such as calcium and manganese regulate a plethora of cellular processes ranging from signaling and oxidative stress to proteostasis and energy metabolism. READ MORE

  4. 4. Renal function after transplantation of the liver and intestine

    Author : Gustaf Herlenius; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : adult liver transplantation; pediatric liver transplantation; intestinal transplantation; multivisceral transplantation; immunosuppression; calcineurin inhibitors; glomerular filtration rate; renal function; nephrotoxicity; chronic kidney disease; renal replacement therapy; mortality;

    Abstract : Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) after liver (LT) or intestinal (IT) transplantation may decrease patient survival. Calcineurin inhibitors (CNI) play a major role in its development. Aims: Describe long term renal function and risk factors for developing CKD in adults and children after LT and IT. READ MORE

  5. 5. Skeletal muscle metabolic flexibility : the roles of AMP-activated protein kinase and calcineurin

    Author : Yun Chau Long; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Skeletal muscle; metabolism; glucose; lipid; gene expression; AMP-activated protein kinase; calcineurin; exercise;

    Abstract : Skeletal muscle fibers differ considerably in their metabolic and physiological properties. The metabolic properties of skeletal muscle display a high degree of flexibility which adapts to various physiological demands by shifting energy substrate metabolism. READ MORE
