  1. 1. The interplay of ions in the stimulation of the pancreatic -cell

    Author : Michael Eberhardson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; diabetes; pancreatic β-cells; cytoplasmic calcium; oscillations; glucose; tetrodotoxin; tolbutamide; veratridine; tetraethylammonium; quinine; cesium; H2DIDS; furosemide; transients; microfluorometry; fura-2; MQAE; calcium channels; potassium channels; sodium channels; chloride channels; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Glucose stimulation of insulin release is mediated by depolarisation of the pancreatic β-cells with accompanying entry of Ca2+ through voltage-dependent channels. An important feature of the glucose-induced depolarisation is its rhythmicity causing oscillations of the cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i), which trigger pulsatile release of insulin. 2. 2. Calcium transport in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas - in a changing environment

    Author : Kirsikka Sillanpää; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Climate changes; Ussing chambers; Calcium uptake; Sodium potassium ATPase; Calcium ATPase; Sodium calcium exchanger; Calcium channel; Hemocytes; Mantle epithelium;

    Abstract : Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, is globally one of the most important farmed bivalve species. A prominent features of the C. gigas is the thick CaCO3 shell covering the body of the animal and protecting it from the environment. READ MORE

  3. 3. Targeting the voltage-gated calcium channels as treatment for type 2 diabetes

    Author : Pawel Buda; Diabetes - öpatofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; autophagy; apoptosis; calcium channels; Type 2 Diabetes;

    Abstract : L-type voltage-gated Ca2+ channels are expressed in the plasma membrane of muscles, neurons and endocrine cells where they serve as conductors of signals regulating cellular responses to changes in environment. Malfunctions of channels, as well as deregulations of their activity underlie numerous disorders and diseases commonly called channelopathies. READ MORE

  4. 4. Calcium channel activity and force regulation in smooth muscle: Effects of polyamines and growth stimulation

    Author : Maria Gomez; Kardiovaskulär forskning - immunitet och ateroskleros; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; verapamil; tissue culture; portal vein; patch-clamp; calcium; spermidine; spermine; polyamines; excitation-contraction; smooth muscle; calcium channel; ionomycin.; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The initial signal for contraction in smooth muscle is an increase in [Ca2+]i. Ca2+ ions can either enter the cytosol from the extracellular medium or be released from intracellular stores. Voltage-operated Ca2+ channels (VOC) play a dominant role in the activation of smooth muscle contraction. READ MORE

  5. 5. Calcium transporting ATPases in plant cells

    Author : Malin Olbe; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Triticum aestivum; calcium; Brij 58; calmodulin; Ca2 signalling; inside-out; endoplasmic reticulum; plant; plasma membrane; proteolysis; P-type ATPase; spinach; Spinacea oleracea; trypsin; two-phase; wheat.; Plant biochemistry; Växtbiokemi;

    Abstract : Plant cells carry Ca2+ ATPases to maintain the low resting level of cytosolic Ca2+ (0.1-0.2 µM) found in all eukaryotes. Plant Ca2+ ATPases are mainly located in the plasma membrane, the endoplasmic reticulum and in the vacuolar membrane, and consequently large Ca2+ gradients are created across these membranes.
